GRC Panel Hollow Drumming or Detachment After Installation? Diagnosis & Repair Guide

1. Diagnosis First: Four Causes of Hollow Drumming and Detachment

GRC (Glass-fiber Reinforced Concrete) panel hollow drumming, loosening, or detachment after installation troubles many projects. Drumming isn't just aesthetic — it's a fall-safety hazard that must be addressed seriously. The principle "fix the problem" requires "first identify the cause." Different causes call for completely different fixes. Below, based on engineering cases and Guangdong Qinglong's maintenance experience, is a systematic breakdown of causes, emergency response, and root-fix plans.

GRC panel hollow drumming or detachment rarely stems from a single cause. Investigate systematically before treating. Common root causes include four categories:

  1. Anchorage system failure. The leading cause of detachment accidents. Symptoms: insufficient anchorage points, expansion bolts drilled into hollow bricks or plaster layer, ordinary iron parts failing from corrosion expansion, insufficient anchor torque. In a GRC dry-hanging system, if hangers, back-bolts, or keel fail, the panel loosens gradually.
  2. Bond-layer hollow drumming (wet-application process). For wet-applied GRC thin panels, if the substrate is not cleaned, interface agent is missed, bonding mortar is not full, or panels go up before curing age, voids form between panel and substrate — a hollow sound when tapped. The voided sections eventually fall off under freeze-thaw cycles or vibration.
  3. Panel quality defects. Inadequate curing means insufficient strength, pre-embedded parts out of position, internal lamination or bubble concentrations — failure can originate inside the panel, with the symptom "anchorage still there, panel broken."
  4. Environment & structural deformation. Building settlement, main-structure deformation, severe thermal expansion constrained (e.g., insufficient panel seam) creates stresses beyond design — over time hangers loosen or panel edges crack.

2. Emergency Response: Stop Falls First, Then Fix

When GRC panel hollow drumming or loosening is found, the first priority is preventing falls:

  1. Set up perimeter immediately. Barriers and warning signs below and around the loose panel; expand the perimeter for high-rise.
  2. Temporary fixation. For obviously loose but not yet detached panels, brace, lash, or add temporary hangers to prevent detachment in strong winds.
  3. Full inspection. Tap-check adjacent panels installed with the same batch and method (loose sections sound hollow), inspect hangers, mark problem locations, assess scope.
  4. Preserve evidence. Photograph problem locations, counts, and conditions — for later responsibility determination and repair planning.

3. Targeted Repair Plans

Anchorage failure: Reanchor.

If hangers or anchors have failed, dismantle the problem panel, inspect keel and main structure, replace with stainless or hot-dip galvanized anchors, restore anchor points to design count, rehang and do pull-out testing (typically ≥ 5 kN). Rusted connectors must be fully replaced; no "sick leave" reuse.

Wet-application drumming: Grouting or relaying.

  • Small localized drumming: Low-pressure grouting, injecting cement-based grout through panel seams or drilled holes to fill the void.
  • Large-area drumming or already loose: Grouting hard to ensure effect — dismantle and relay; re-treat substrate, apply interface agent fully, use fully covered bonding mortar, ensure panel curing age meets the requirement.

Panel damage: Whole-panel replacement.

For panels with cracking or lamination, on-site repair is not recommended — repair materials have different shrinkage rates from the original, so the repair site re-cracks or shows obvious color difference over time. Standard practice is to use spare panels reserved from the same batch for whole replacement. This is why 5–10% spare panels are recommended at procurement.

Deformation stress: Release stress.

For damage from too-narrow seams or missing expansion details, repairs must fix construction in parallel: widen seams to 8–12 mm, replace with high-displacement weather-resistant sealant, add expansion joints or sliding bearings on over-length walls — releasing thermal stress at the root.

4. The Cure — Eliminate Problems Before Installation

Hollow drumming is essentially an "inherent defect" exploding in service. Prevention far outweighs repair.

  1. Material source control. Choose regular-manufacturer products with normalized curing regimes and strength standards; obtain flexural strength and other test reports.
  2. Anchorage scheme by calculation. Anchor point count, locations, and specifications are determined by calculation of panel self-weight and wind load, not by gut feel.
  3. Concealed-work acceptance. After keel and anchorage are installed but before panel closing, hold a dedicated acceptance with anchor pull-out sampling.
  4. Standard seam width. Don't chase the "tight seam" visual — leave space for thermal expansion.
  5. Clear warranty liability. Specify warranty period and scope in the contract; choose full-chain suppliers offering installation and maintenance.

5. Guangdong Qinglong — Full-Cycle Assurance from Prevention to Maintenance

Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Zhongshan, Guangdong, Qinglong has nearly three decades of focus on UHPC, GRC, GRG, GRP. A national high-tech enterprise, "Specialized, Refined, Differential, Innovative" SME, a participant in drafting GRC Building Application Technical Standard (JGJ/T 423-2018), with 50+ authorized patents.

For the industry-wide pain point of hollow drumming and detachment, Qinglong's assurance system runs through the full project cycle: production — strict curing regime and factory testing ensure panel strength, pre-embedded parts accurately reserved at the factory, preventing panel defects from source; design — BIM detail design performs mechanical calculation on anchor nodes, paired with salt-spray-tested 316 stainless steel anchors, with a 3D archive of each connection point for full traceability; installation — in-house certified construction team, anchor points pull-out tested by batch; maintenance — after-sales inspection service for in-service project panels (loosening, aging sealant), plus a same-batch spare-panel reserve mechanism. This "prevention-first, fast response" mode has been validated across thousands of projects in China and abroad, including Huawei Industrial Park and Wuhan Hanxiu Theater.

6. Conclusion

The treatment principle for GRC panel hollow drumming and detachment can be summarized in one sentence: cordon off to prevent falls first, then investigate to find the cause, then apply the targeted fix, and ultimately rely on source prevention. Anchorage failure — reanchor; wet-application drumming — grout or relay; panel damage — whole replacement; stress damage — repair and correct construction simultaneously. Targeted fixes truly solve problems. For owners, the more economical strategy is to choose a reliable integrated material-and-installation supplier from project initiation. With full-chain service capability and full-cycle maintenance, Guangdong Qinglong provides systematic assurance for the long-term safety of GRC decoration projects.

GRC Panel Hollow Drumming or Detachment After Installation? Diagnosis & Repair Guide
GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) decorative panels developing hollowing, loosening, or even detachment after installation is a headache for many project owners. Hollowing and detachment not only affect the appearance, but also touch on the safety bottom line of objects falling from height, and must be taken seriously. But the premise of 'what to do when a problem occurs' is 'first figuring out where the problem lies'—different causes call for completely different handling methods.
