1. Three Core Elements of Genuine GRC
To identify real from fake, you first need to know the standard for "real." A qualified GRC curtain wall panel must satisfy three material conditions simultaneously:
- Alkali-resistant glass fiber. Must be AR glass fiber with zirconia content meeting the standard — this is GRC's "rebar." Ordinary non-alkali-resistant or medium-alkali glass fiber corrodes in the alkaline cement environment, strength drops sharply in 1–2 years, and the panel cracks and powders — the most common trick in "fake GRC."
- Low-alkali cement. Low-alkalinity sulphoaluminate cement or modified, matched cement system — reducing alkaline attack on the fiber.
- Reasonable fiber dosage and forming process. Fibers must be uniformly dispersed and meet design dosage; spray or premix casting forming ensures flexural toughness.
Missing any one means it isn't really GRC.
2. Five Visual Inspections to Tell Quality
For non-specialist buyers, the following "Five Inspections" can quickly screen out most inferior products.
- Inspect the cross-section. Ask the manufacturer for samples and break them on site (or view cross-section pieces): quality GRC has a dense, even cross-section with visible fine fiber pull-out traces, no large pores or lamination; inferior products show loose, porous cross-sections, even visible lamination and sand piles, sparse or hardly visible fibers.
- Inspect the surface. Quality GRC panels have flat, dense surfaces with no obvious bubbles, pockmarks, color difference, or efflorescence; the back is flat and embedded parts are orderly. Inferior panels show dense pores, blotchy color, uneven backs, and embedded parts randomly tilted.
- Inspect the weight. GRC's bulk density is about 1.8–2.0 g/cm³. For the same specification, a panel that's noticeably lighter may mean insufficient fiber or cement, with excessive lightweight filler; noticeably heavier may mean too much sand, with density "stacked" rather than processed. Ask the manufacturer for density test data.
- Inspect the toughness. Take a small sample and do a simple bending test: qualified GRC has some toughness — fine cracks appear first under bending, not instant brittle fracture; inferior products snap off brittle with a clean break, indicating essentially no fiber reinforcement.
- Inspect for sand shedding. Vigorously rub the back or edge of the panel with your palm: quality panels are hard and barely shed sand; inferior panels leave sand on the hand — indicating over-high water-cement ratio or insufficient curing.
3. Data Inspection — Four Types of Reports to Request
Beyond visual inspection, formal procurement must be based on test data. Key reports and indicators to verify:
- Flexural (bending) strength. Per JGJ/T 423-2018, curtain-wall GRC panels must have flexural strength ≥ 12 MPa; premium products reach 18–25 MPa+. This is the index that best reflects fiber quality and dosage.
- Glass fiber content and alkali-resistance evidence. Require AR glass fiber material certificates (zirconia content) and fiber dosage test reports.
- Factory inspection report: Items include dimensional deviation, appearance quality, unit-area mass.
- Type inspection report: Issued by CMA/CNAS-accredited third-party institution, covering freeze-thaw, fire rating (A1 non-combustible) and other durability indicators.
Be wary of manufacturers who are evasive about reports — offering only "qualification certificates" without actual test data.
4. Manufacturer Inspection — Behind Products Is a System
GRC is highly process-sensitive. The same formula in different equipment and management regimes yields vastly different products. When auditing a manufacturer, focus on:
- Standards participation: Manufacturers participating in national or industry standard drafting tend to have higher technical floors.
- Scaled bases and curing facilities: Curing kilns and constant-temperature/humidity workshops are prerequisites for consistent strength; open-air natural-curing small workshops have wide quality swings.
- Traceability system: Can raw material batches, production records, and test data be traced back to each panel?
- In-service projects: Physically audit projects delivered over 3 years ago — observe cracking, efflorescence, or deformation — time is the most impartial verifier.
- Installation and maintenance capability: Manufacturers that only sell panels and don't handle installation tend to blame the installation side when issues occur.
5. Guangdong Qinglong — A Quality System That Can Be Verified
Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Zhongshan, Guangdong, Qinglong has nearly three decades of focus on UHPC, GRC, GRG, GRP, and other high-performance building materials. A national high-tech enterprise, "Specialized, Refined, Differential, Innovative" SME, participant in drafting GRC Building Application Technical Standard (JGJ/T 423-2018) and UHPC Non-Load-Bearing Components General Technical Specification, with 50+ authorized patents.
In quality control, Qinglong's GRC products use AR glass fiber and low-alkali cement systems, with measured flexural strength > 20 MPa — exceeding standard baselines. Production has standardized curing facilities, batch-by-batch testing, and traceable quality data. Project-side, Wuhan Hanxiu Theater (15 mm-thick white-cement carved GRC), Zhuhai Chimelong Marine Science Museum, Huawei Industrial Park, and over a thousand in-service projects in China and abroad are open for physical audit. For buyers, this "standards participation + data transparency + case verifiability" system is the reference model for distinguishing and screening quality GRC suppliers.
6. Conclusion
Identifying real vs. fake / quality GRC curtain wall panels can be summarized as three inspections: inspect materials — AR fiber and low-alkali cement are the baseline; inspect data — flexural strength and other test reports are hard currency; inspect systems — standards participation, capacity, and in-service cases are touchstones. Appearance can be imitated; material essence and long-term performance cannot. Recommend buyers to "sample first, then small batch, then full order" and physically audit the manufacturer's base and finished projects. Guangdong Qinglong invites all kinds of project parties to verify against the above standards with nearly three decades of technical depth and a transparent, traceable quality system.
