Industry-standard GRC repair logic falls into three levels matched to different operating requirements, avoiding over- or under-repair.
Level 1 — Surface damage: Only the finish layer has come off, with no substrate cracking and no exposed internal reinforcement or anchors. Use a same-formulation GRC repair mortar to level. Match the pigment ratio of the original component for color calibration. After curing, apply a weather-resistant surface coat. This handles daily small scuffs and dent damage, with single-component repairs finished within 24 hours.
Level 2 — Moderate structural damage: Cracks under 10 cm and local corner loss, but internal anchors are not deformed and the main body is aligned. Clean the damaged area, plant short-cut glass fiber as a reinforcement base, fill in lifts with dedicated repair material. After curing, run a pull-off test to confirm bond strength meets industry standards. This level should be performed by a team with GRC installation qualifications to avoid repair-layer detachment later.
Level 3 — Severe structural damage: Through-thickness cracks over 10 cm, deformed anchors, or main-body misalignment. Replacement of the same specification is strongly preferred over local repair — especially for super-high-rise or coastal high-corrosion facades where local repair cannot restore the original one-piece structural strength. Forced repair leaves a permanent safety risk.
Whether the strength of a repaired GRC component matches the original depends on two core variables, both tied to repair discipline.
1. Repair-material match. With the same low-alkali cement and the same specification of alkali-resistant glass fiber as the original, a properly executed repair can restore over 85% of the original compressive strength — fully adequate for outdoor facades. Random use of ordinary cement mortar not only creates color drift but also leaves the repaired zone at only 30–40% of the original flexural strength, which leads to secondary cracking and spalling.
2. Repair-process compliance. A compliant repair follows five standard steps: material inspection, substrate preparation, fiber reinforcement, layered curing, and weather-resistance testing, all aligned with the national GRC building-application standard. Under this discipline, the overall strength loss of the repaired component stays under 10%. Non-standard practice, by contrast, can damage the corrosion-protection layer of the embedded reinforcement inside the panel and accelerate aging.
Many companies in the industry — including leading GRC firms — are advancing the standardization of repair processes and exploring more efficient field-repair techniques. There is no absolute rule that "repair always means a major strength loss"; it depends entirely on the professionalism and compliance of the repair team.
Two traps catch operators when GRC components are damaged:
When selecting a repair service, prefer providers with integrated GRC production and installation experience. Such teams understand the raw-material formulation and structural characteristics of GRC, judge the actual extent of damage accurately, and avoid over- or under-repair. Compliant repair projects carry a 1–2 year warranty so the post-repair responsibility is clear.
1. Will a repaired GRC component show color drift?
If the original finish formulation is sampled and matched in advance, then color is fine-tuned after curing, no visible difference remains. The visual requirement of a facade is fully met.
2. Can damaged super-high-rise GRC panels be repaired on site?
Light surface damage can be repaired on site. For moderate or severe damage, the high-altitude operating condition must be evaluated; in some cases, replacing with the same specification is the safer option.
3. Do fine cracks in GRC need immediate repair?
If the crack is not expanding and not leaking, periodic monitoring is acceptable. If the crack widens, repair immediately to prevent the damage from escalating.
