When GRC panels are used in ceiling systems, their load-bearing requirements constitute a systematic design issue integrating "self-weight, additional loads, long-term deformation control, and safety reserves," with the core objective of ensuring absolute safety, no sagging, and no deformation throughout long-term use. Qinglong Group summarizes the load-bearing design principles for ceiling GRC panels as "precise calculation, reliable connections, and strict deformation control." In the large-scale irregular artistic ceiling project of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, we ensured the safety and stability over decades of service of complex-shaped GRC panels each exceeding 10 square meters in area through finite element analysis and full-scale load testing.
Ceiling GRC panels must bear various types of loads: 1) Permanent loads: the self-weight of the panels themselves, which is the most fundamental load. 2) Additional loads: the weight of equipment such as lighting fixtures, air conditioning diffusers, maintenance catwalks, and sprinkler piping, for which connectors must be pre-embedded in advance. 3) Dynamic loads: foot traffic loads during personnel maintenance (maintenance catwalks must be designed, and directly stepping on panels is strictly prohibited). During the detailed design stage, Qinglong requires the relevant disciplines to provide the loads and positions of all equipment to be suspended for integrated design.
As ceiling panels, GRC panels are primarily subject to bending. The mid-span bending moment and deflection under the most unfavorable load combination must be calculated based on panel size, thickness, and support point layout. The flexural load-bearing capacity must meet code requirements with a sufficient safety factor (usually not less than 2.5). For large-span or irregularly shaped panels, finite element analysis must be performed to accurately simulate stress distribution. Deflection control is key to ceiling aesthetics; typically, short-term deflection must not exceed 1/250 of the span, and long-term deflection (accounting for creep) must meet the requirement of no visually perceptible sagging.
The safety of connection nodes takes priority over the panels themselves. The suspension system must adopt flexible connections (such as metal adjustable hanger rods) that allow slight structural deformation. Each suspension point must be independently adjustable for leveling. Hangers pre-embedded in GRC panels (such as pre-embedded threaded rods and steel plates) must have sufficient anchorage depth and pull-out resistance, verified through pull-out tests. For heavy equipment, an independent suspension system must be provided; direct installation on GRC panels is strictly prohibited. Qinglong's ceiling system adopts a multi-layer load transmission system of "main keel – secondary keel – hanger" to ensure loads are effectively transferred to the main structure.
GRC materials exhibit drying shrinkage and creep characteristics. Low-shrinkage mixes should be selected in the design, and panel joints should be appropriately arranged to release deformation stress. After installation, long-term deformation monitoring is required. Qinglong recommends establishing a regular inspection regime to check for loose hanger rods and for cracks or sagging on panel surfaces. Scientific load-bearing design is the cornerstone of the safety and aesthetics of GRC artistic ceilings.
