GRC panels of different thicknesses vary in mechanical performance, self-weight, cost, and formability, making them suitable for distinctly different architectural scenarios. Qinglong Group has systematically matched the thickness spectrum of GRC panels with their applicable scenarios, forming a complete product line ranging from ultra-thin decorative elements to structural components. The key to selecting the appropriate thickness lies in precisely matching "load conditions, functional requirements, architectural expression, and economy". In the Shenzhen Pingshan High-Tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center project, we applied GRC panels of various thicknesses from 12mm to 30mm differentially to different parts such as facades, cornices, and interiors, achieving an optimal balance between performance and cost.
These panels are the lightest in weight and offer the greatest shaping capability. 8-12mm panels: suitable for interior decorative walls, suspended ceilings, thin and lightweight artistic screens, Logo signage, and other areas that are extremely sensitive to loads or pursue an ultimate sense of lightness. Their bending stiffness is relatively low, requiring denser support spacing. 12-15mm panels: the mainstream choice for interior and exterior decoration, suitable for architectural facade decorative mouldings, window surrounds, door surrounds, advertising back panels, and the like. While ensuring a certain level of stiffness, they can achieve relatively complex single-curved shapes. Most of the decorative mouldings Qinglong has supplied to many commercial complexes use this thickness range.
This is the most widely used thickness range, achieving a balance between strength, stiffness, and economy. 15-18mm panels: suitable for dry-hanging curtain walls on non-primary load-bearing areas of most building facades, with panel sizes up to approximately 1.2m x 2.4m. 18-20mm panels: suitable for curtain wall projects with higher standard wind pressure values (such as coastal areas and high-rise buildings) or slightly larger panel sizes (such as up to 1.5m x 3m). GRC panels of this thickness offer good bending and impact resistance, making them a reliable choice for building envelopes.
Used for areas bearing heavier loads or with special requirements for stiffness and durability. 20-25mm panels: suitable for large cantilevered cornices, heavy decorative components, low-rise walls requiring strong impact resistance, or fire wall panels requiring higher fire resistance ratings. 25-30mm and thicker panels: mainly used for structural components, such as artistic walls with extremely high perforation rates (where the thickness of the "ribs" must be ensured), specially shaped landscape components, or base materials for integrated panels composited with insulation layers. The self-weight and cost of thick panels increase significantly, so they must be selected with caution.
Thickness determination requires calculation rather than relying solely on experience. In the early stages of a project, Qinglong's technical team performs mechanical calculations based on parameters such as wind load, snow load, self-weight, panel size, and support spacing, to recommend the most economical and safe thickness. At the same time, production processes (thicknesses that are too thin or too thick both increase production difficulty) and the convenience of transportation and installation must also be considered. Scientific selection is the first step to a successful GRC project.
