The bulk density of lightweight GRC panels is one of the core indicators that distinguishes it from ordinary concrete and reflects the material's lightweight, high-strength characteristics. Based on 28 years of GRC R&D and production experience, Qinglong Group strictly controls the dry bulk density of lightweight GRC within the range of 1800 kg/m³ to 2000 kg/m³, a value significantly lower than the approximately 2400 kg/m³ of ordinary concrete. By optimizing aggregate gradation, using low-density admixtures, and strictly controlling porosity, Qinglong has reduced self-weight while ensuring the material delivers excellent mechanical properties. For example, in a decorative molding project for a super high-rise building in Shenzhen, the GRC components we supplied with a bulk density of 1850 kg/m³ met strength requirements while weighing more than 20% less than traditional concrete components, greatly reducing structural loads and installation difficulty.
The key to achieving lightweight properties lies in scientific material design and process control. Qinglong precisely regulates bulk density through the following methods: 1) Partially replacing traditional quartz sand with lightweight or hollow microspheres to reduce aggregate density while maintaining strength; 2) Optimizing the mix proportion to reduce total paste content while meeting workability and fiber bonding requirements; 3) Introducing controlled micro air bubbles to form a uniform, closed pore structure. These techniques require a precise balance between reducing bulk density and maintaining strength and durability. Through extensive mix proportion testing, Qinglong's laboratory has established a database correlating bulk density with key performance properties.
Lower bulk density is not always better; it is closely related to compressive strength, flexural strength, elastic modulus, and other properties. Within the bulk density range of 1800-2000 kg/m³, Qinglong's lightweight GRC ensures a compressive strength of no less than 40 MPa and a flexural strength of no less than 10 MPa, fully meeting the requirements of most decorative and non-load-bearing structures. Excessively low bulk density often comes at the cost of mechanical performance and durability, potentially leading to increased cracking risk and reduced impact resistance. Therefore, when selecting GRC panels, bulk density must be matched with the mechanical indicators required by the project.
Lower bulk density delivers significant engineering advantages: 1) Reduced structural burden: Lightweight GRC is an ideal choice for renovations of old buildings or load-sensitive structures. 2) Lower transportation and hoisting costs: Reduced weight improves logistics efficiency and safety. 3) Simplified installation joints: Strength requirements for support systems and connectors are correspondingly reduced. In multiple historic building renewal projects, Qinglong's application of lightweight GRC has solved the problem of insufficient load-bearing capacity of the original structures.
Bulk density is a key item in the factory inspection of GRC panels. In accordance with national standards, Qinglong conducts dry bulk density testing on finished products using the volumetric method or water displacement method, ensuring that the bulk density of every batch remains stable within the qualified range. Stable bulk density is an important indicator of mature production processes and strict raw material control, and it also serves as an intuitive metric for customers to assess a supplier's technical capability.
