The mold-making precision of curved GRC decorative panels is the decisive factor determining the final shape, dimensions, and installation fit of the components, with requirements far exceeding those of flat molds. Qinglong Group focuses the core of its mold precision control on three key dimensions: "profile precision, positioning precision, and repeatability precision." For curved panels, the deviation between the mold profile and the theoretical 3D model must typically be controlled within ±1.5mm, with deviations of key positioning features (such as edge lines and embedded part locations) not exceeding ±2mm. In the production of the 287 double-curved red panels for the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, after the main steel mold was machined by five-axis CNC and re-verified through 3D scanning, the overall profile deviation was less than 0.5mm, laying the cornerstone for the success of this world-class complex project.
The beauty of curves lies in their flowing lines. The mold profile must precisely reproduce the design curvature; any localized out-of-tolerance area may cause a "kinked" appearance or uneven gaps during assembly, disrupting visual continuity. Qinglong uses high-strength materials (such as aerospace aluminum, mold steel, and high-performance epoxy resin) to build the master mold, digitally carved through five-axis simultaneous CNC. After machining, a 3D laser scanner captures the mold's point cloud data, which undergoes color-map deviation analysis against the original digital model; out-of-tolerance points are then hand-finished by fine grinding and polishing until the precision requirements are met. The mold surface finish must also reach a mirror effect, so as to directly yield a smooth GRC surface or transfer the desired fine texture.
The spatial positioning of curved panels relies not only on the curved surface itself but also on precise edge lines and embedded part systems. The mold must incorporate machined datum holes and locating edges for positioning embedded parts, process lifting points, and subsequent installation surveying. The machining precision of these positioning features (typically positional tolerance of ±0.5mm and angular tolerance of ±0.1°) ensures accurate alignment between different curved components and between components and the main structure. In the "Flowing Cloud" project at the Nanning New Media Center, a unified mold coordinate system ensured that over a thousand irregular panels assembled perfectly in the air.
For curved panels requiring mass production (such as window surrounds and arches with standard curvatures), controlling mold deformation over repeated use (i.e., repeatability precision) is critical. Qinglong manufactures production molds from steel structures with reinforcing ribs or high-performance composite materials, ensuring profile deformation stays below 0.2mm over dozens of production cycles. Meanwhile, the mold's draft angle design and thermal expansion coefficient must be precisely calculated to accommodate temperature and humidity changes during GRC curing, preventing thermal stress from causing slight mold deformation that would compromise the consistency of batch products.
For overly complex or oversized curved components, the mold often needs to be rationally split into multiple modules to facilitate machining, transportation, demolding, and reuse. The parting line design must be concealed and must not affect the component's appearance, and the connections between modules must be precise and secure to ensure that joints do not compromise forming quality. Qinglong's mold engineers have extensive experience in parting design and can achieve the best possible balance among precision, cost, and production efficiency. A high-precision mold is the first—and most critical—bridge for curved GRC decorative panels to move from drawings to reality.
