Selecting an adhesive for bonding GRC decorative panels to the substrate (concrete, masonry, steel plate, etc.) is a key technical decision that affects installation firmness, durability, and system safety. Improper selection may lead to hollowing, detachment, and even safety accidents. Based on extensive engineering practice, Qinglong Group summarizes the adhesive selection principles as "substrate compatibility, strength matching, durability coordination, and construction convenience." In the construction of the large indoor GRC art wall at Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC, we selected a high-performance cement-based bonding mortar for the concrete substrate, supplemented with mechanical anchoring, ensuring the absolute firmness of individual panels weighing dozens of kilograms on vertical surfaces.
Different substrates require adhesives with different characteristics: 1) Concrete and cement mortar substrates: modified cement-based bonding mortar is the first choice. Its chemical composition is close to that of inorganic substrates, offering good compatibility through the combined action of physical interlocking and chemical bonding. 2) Autoclaved aerated concrete blocks and lightweight partition panels: a more flexible bonding mortar is required to accommodate possible substrate deformation. 3) Metal substrates such as steel or aluminum plates: epoxy resin-based or modified silane structural adhesives are required; these adhesives have extremely strong bonding to metals and excellent resistance to heat-humidity aging. Qinglong requires on-site substrate pull-off testing to confirm substrate strength and select the adhesive accordingly.
The "tensile bond strength" of the adhesive (bond strength to both GRC and the substrate) must meet design requirements, generally no less than 0.5MPa, and higher for critical areas. Beyond initial strength, its "water-resistant bond strength", "strength after heat aging" and "strength after freeze-thaw cycles" are equally critical, as these determine long-term reliability under harsh environments such as humidity, high temperature, and cold. The adhesives selected by Qinglong have all undergone rigorous long-term performance testing to ensure a design life comparable to that of GRC.
GRC and the substrate (especially exterior wall substrates) undergo different expansion and contraction deformations due to temperature and humidity changes. If the adhesive is too rigid, deformation stresses cannot be released, causing failure at the bonding interface or within the GRC panel. Therefore, exterior wall applications should use adhesives with a certain degree of flexibility (low compressive-to-flexural strength ratio). The flexible adhesives provided by Qinglong have strong lateral deformation capacity, effectively absorbing part of the stress and reducing the risk of cracking.
The adhesive must have good water retention, sag resistance, and sufficient open time (adjustability time) to facilitate panel application and adjustment by workers. For indoor projects, low-VOC, non-toxic, environmentally friendly products must be selected. Qinglong provides matching interface primers, notched trowels, and complete construction guidance to ensure the adhesive performs to its fullest. For heavy, oversized, or outdoor high-level GRC panels, Qinglong strongly recommends a composite fixing method of "adhesive bonding + mechanical anchoring" to provide double safety assurance.
