UHPC panels offer no inherent thermal conductivity advantage over ordinary concrete; their outstanding thermal insulation performance comes primarily from their role as thin "structural-decorative integration" panels that can be combined with high-efficiency insulation materials to form high-performance composite systems. Comparing material thermal conductivity alone, UHPC (approx. 1.5-2.0 W/(m·K)) is slightly lower than ordinary C30 concrete (approx. 1.7-2.5 W/(m·K)), but the difference is not significant. However, when UHPC serves as a 10-30mm thick outer decorative leaf panel combined with 100mm or more of rock wool or polyurethane insulation, the overall heat transfer coefficient (K-value) of the resulting curtain wall system can be more than 50% lower than that of a traditional system using 200mm thick reinforced concrete shear walls with external insulation. The UHPC integrated insulation-decorative panel system applied by Qinglong Group at the Shenzhen Pingshan High-Tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center achieved a measured heat transfer coefficient as low as 0.40 W/(m²·K), far exceeding national energy efficiency standards.
From a materials science perspective, thermal conductivity depends on density and composition. UHPC is extremely dense with very low porosity, which to some extent enhances its heat conduction (since solid skeletons transfer heat more efficiently than air). On the other hand, the numerous fine steel fibers and admixture interfaces within it increase phonon scattering at the micro level, slightly hindering heat flow. Overall, both are materials with relatively high thermal conductivity, and neither can be used alone as insulation. Their thermal advantage lies in being "thin": they can provide sufficient strength and protection with minimal thickness, leaving the thickness space to the insulation layer.
This is where UHPC's true value in building energy efficiency lies. The thermal resistance of a building envelope comes mainly from the insulation layer. UHPC's high strength allows it to serve as an external protective layer only 20mm thick, firmly covering 100-200mm of high-efficiency insulation materials (such as rock wool or vacuum insulation panels). Traditional stone or concrete curtain walls, due to their heavy self-weight and high strength requirements, usually have thicker outer leaf panels (30-50mm), which encroaches on insulation space or requires more complex support structures. Therefore, a thin UHPC panel composite system can achieve a thicker insulation layer within the same total exterior wall thickness, delivering superior overall insulation performance.
UHPC curtain wall systems typically use thermal-break connectors. These connectors are made of low-conductivity materials (such as nylon 66 + glass fiber) or stainless steel combined with insulating washers, effectively blocking the "thermal bridges" formed by metal connectors and preventing heat from being conducted from indoors to outdoors through framing, hangers, and other components. This design further reduces the system's overall heat transfer coefficient. In contrast, the steel reinforcement mesh in ordinary concrete walls constitutes a continuous thermal bridge that is difficult to eliminate entirely.
UHPC and ordinary concrete have similar specific heat capacity and density, so their thermal inertia (heat storage capacity) per unit volume is comparable. This means the two are on par in their ability to stabilize indoor temperature fluctuations. However, due to the typical "external insulation" construction of UHPC systems, the high heat-storage UHPC panels are placed on the outer side of the insulation layer. This construction helps reduce the impact of outdoor temperature fluctuations on the main structure, positively contributing to indoor thermal stability.
In summary, the insulation advantage of UHPC panels is systemic. Through their "high-strength, ultra-thin" characteristics, they provide greater design freedom for building envelopes, making it possible to construct exterior wall systems with ultra-low energy consumption and high durability. Qinglong Group's integrated solution is a best practice of this advantage.
