What Are the Differences in Mold Requirements Between UHPC Single-Curved Panels and Double-Curved Panels?

The mold requirements for UHPC single-curved and double-curved panels differ fundamentally. This stems from differences in geometric complexity, developability, and manufacturing precision, directly causing mold cost, machining methods, and production difficulty to increase by orders of magnitude. Qinglong Group's technical definition is: single-curved panel molds mainly control “generatrix precision and positioning,” while double-curved panel molds must ensure “full-field precision of the 3D surface and the perfect realization of non-developable surfaces.” In the Nanning New Media Center project, we applied both single-curved guide panels and double-curved art panels simultaneously; the difference in mold investment and manufacturing cycle was as much as 3 times, clearly reflecting the technical gap between the two.

Geometric Nature: Developable vs. Non-Developable Surfaces

This is the most fundamental difference. Single-curved surfaces (such as cylindrical and conical surfaces) are, in geometric terms, “developable surfaces,” meaning they can be unfolded into a plane without stretching or compression. This means their mold surfaces can be machined with relatively simple linear or circular motions (such as three-axis CNC), and mold materials (such as wood and GRP) are easier to form. Double-curved surfaces, on the other hand, are “non-developable surfaces” (such as spherical and saddle surfaces); they cannot be flattened without deformation, and the curvature at every point may vary. They must be carved three-dimensionally through five-axis simultaneous CNC machining, placing extremely high demands on the stiffness of mold materials and machining precision.

Mold Machining: The Leap from Three-Axis to Five-Axis CNC

Single-curved panel molds can usually be machined on a three-axis CNC milling machine (with the tool moving along the three linear axes X, Y, and Z) to produce the required section lines (generatrix), which are then swept in straight lines or arcs to form the curved surface. Machining is relatively simple and costs are lower. Double-curved panel molds, however, must use a five-axis simultaneous CNC center, whose tool has, in addition to linear motion, two rotary axes (such as the A and C axes), allowing the cutter head to remain perpendicular to the complex curved surface while carving, ensuring normal-direction precision at any point on the surface. Five-axis machining involves complex programming and long processing times, with high equipment and tooling costs.

Precision Control: Line Precision vs. Surface Precision

Precision control for single-curved panels focuses on the profile accuracy of the “generatrix” (such as radius-of-curvature tolerance) and the “straightness” along the guide direction; inspection can usually be carried out with templates, calipers, and stretched wires. Precision control for double-curved panels, however, is a full-field “surface accuracy”: every point on the 3D model must deviate from the actual mold within the allowable range (e.g., ±0.5mm). This must rely on 3D laser scanning or large coordinate measuring machines (CMM) for full-size inspection, generating color-coded deviation maps for verification.

Mold Structure, Materials, and Service Life

Because the forces involved are more complex, double-curved panel molds require greater structural rigidity to resist stresses during casting and demolding, typically using steel molds with stiffening ribs or high-performance composite molds, at a cost far exceeding the wooden molds or simple GRP molds commonly used for single-curved panels. Double-curved molds also place more stringent demands on draft angles and parting line design to prevent “mold locking.” In terms of repeated use, the maintenance costs and service life management of high-precision double-curved molds are also more demanding.

Therefore, choosing between single-curved and double-curved panels is by no means merely a stylistic difference; it directly determines the technical path, cost budget, and production schedule of the mold engineering. In the early stages of a project, Qinglong Group conducts in-depth manufacturability analysis to help clients optimize their forms—approaching non-developable surfaces with developable single-curved surfaces as much as possible while satisfying the design intent—thereby finding the optimal balance between artistic expression and engineering economics.
