Drilling holes in UHPC panels does carry a risk of cracking, primarily stemming from the material's ultra-high strength, high brittleness, and low fracture toughness. Improper drilling operations can easily induce micro-cracks at hole edges, and may even cause brittle fracture of the entire panel. However, through systematic measures such as "selecting specialized tools, optimizing process parameters, strengthening cooling during operation, and reinforcing hole edges," this risk can be effectively controlled and eliminated. Qinglong Group successfully completed on-site drilling of over 10,000 large-dimension undercut anchor installation holes for the Yirui Biotech Building project in Shenzhen, with not a single case of cracking, validating the reliability of its scientific process.
Ordinary stone or concrete drill bits are completely unsuitable for UHPC. High-quality diamond thin-wall bits (hollow drills) must be used. Key requirements include: 1) Diamond quality: select high-strength, sharp diamond particles to ensure cutting rather than grinding. 2) Bond: adopt a metal bond specifically optimized for UHPC, which keeps the diamond protrusion sharp while preventing excessively rapid wear. 3) Waterway design: the bit must have good internal or external cooling waterways to ensure the coolant reaches the cutting edge directly—this is the core of preventing thermal stress cracks. Qinglong typically specifies UHPC-dedicated bits from internationally renowned brands.
Incorrect rotation speed and feed pressure are direct triggers of cracking. 1) Rotation speed: a medium-to-high speed should be used (for example, for a 100mm-diameter bit, approximately 800-1200 rpm), allowing the diamond particles to "cut" at the optimal linear speed rather than "grind" at low speed. 2) Feed pressure: "light pressure, slow feed" is essential—let the bit "bite" into the material rather than being "pressed" into it. The operator should feel a smooth, uniform resistance; once a sudden surge in resistance or abnormal machine vibration is felt, the bit should be retracted immediately for inspection. 3) Layered drilling: for thicker panels (>30mm), it is recommended to drill through in two or three passes, retracting each time to clear debris and cool the bit.
The high heat generated during drilling is a primary cause of thermal stress concentration and micro-crack propagation. A sufficient amount of coolant (usually water-based cutting fluid) must be used for continuous cooling. During on-site drilling, a dedicated water drill stand or a custom-made water supply device can be used to ensure the coolant continuously covers the contact surface between the bit and the panel. Dry drilling is strictly prohibited! Cooling also provides lubrication and chip evacuation, keeping the drilling smooth.
For particularly critical installation holes or drilling in thin panels, additional measures can be taken: 1) Pre-applied reinforcing film: bond high-strength fiber fabric or thin aluminum sheet to the back of the drilling location to increase local constraint at the hole mouth and prevent exit-side chipping. 2) Hole edge chamfering: after drilling, lightly chamfer the hole edge with a diamond chamfering tool to eliminate the micro-notch effect and reduce stress concentration. 3) Hole wall reinforcement: before installing the undercut anchor, a dedicated low-viscosity epoxy resin can be injected to seal and strengthen micro-cracks in the hole wall.
In summary, cracking during UHPC drilling is a process problem that is "preventable and controllable." By providing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and dedicated toolkits, along with rigorous training for construction personnel, Qinglong Group ensures high-quality, zero-risk on-site machining.
