The precision of molds for UHPC double-curved panels is the cornerstone that determines the final form, dimensions, and installation fit of the components, with requirements far exceeding those for ordinary flat or single-curved components. Based on its practice in landmark double-curved projects such as the Wuhan Han Show Theatre and the Nanning New Media Center, Qinglong Group defines the core of mold precision control as a trinity of "surface profile precision, positioning precision, and repeatability precision." Among these, the mold's surface profile error is typically controlled within ±0.5mm, while the positioning error of key feature lines and boundaries must not exceed ±1.0mm. To achieve the 287 unique double-curved red panels of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, we used five-axis CNC to precisely machine the steel master molds. Their surface profiles were verified by 3D laser scanning, with errors across the entire domain below 0.3mm, laying a physical foundation for subsequent high-quality reproduction and the precise forming of UHPC components.
The complex geometry of double-curved surfaces requires the mold surface to remain highly consistent with the digital model. Any local out-of-tolerance deviation may cause "hard spots" or uneven gaps when panels are joined, disrupting visual smoothness. Qinglong uses high-rigidity materials (such as aerospace aluminum or mold steel) to make master molds, performing multi-pass milling on five-axis linked CNC machine tools through "rough machining – semi-finish machining – finish machining," followed by manual work combined with coordinate measuring machines for local trimming and polishing after finish machining, ensuring G1 continuity (tangent continuity) or even G2 continuity (curvature continuity) of the curved surface. The surface finish of the mold is also crucial, as it directly affects the surface texture of UHPC after demolding.
The spatial positioning of double-curved panels relies not only on their own curved surfaces but also on precise boundary and embedded part positioning systems. The mold must integrate precision fixtures and positioning pin holes for locating embedded parts, process lifting points, and subsequent installation datums. The machining precision of these positioning features (positional tolerance ±0.2mm) ensures that the relative relationships between different components are accurate. In the "Flowing Clouds" project at the Nanning New Media Center, we used a unified coordinate system on the molds to ensure that over a thousand double-curved panels could join precisely in the air like puzzle pieces.
For double-curved panels requiring mass production (such as serialized units), controlling mold deformation after repeated use (i.e., repeatability precision) is key. Qinglong casts production molds from high-strength composite materials (such as high-performance epoxy resin combined with glass fiber/carbon fiber) and reinforces them with stiffening ribs and steel frames, ensuring surface profile deformation remains below 0.1mm over dozens or even hundreds of production cycles. Meanwhile, the mold's draft angle design and thermal expansion coefficient matching must be precisely calculated to accommodate temperature changes during UHPC steam curing and prevent thermal stress from causing slight mold deformation.
Therefore, the mold for UHPC double-curved panels is not merely a "container" but a "high-precision bridge" that transforms digital creativity into physical reality. Qinglong Group regards mold engineering as the cutting-edge core of manufacturing, where its investment and precision directly determine the ultimate height of architectural artistry and engineering reliability.
