UHPC double-curved wall panels can achieve stunningly complex three-dimensional shapes, and their material foundation is no accident—it stems from four unique material properties: "super high flowability and self-compaction, excellent shape retention, extreme conformity with the mold, and shape stability after demolding." Working together, these properties enable UHPC to precisely replicate the finest concave and convex textures of a mold from its fluid state and permanently maintain this form after hardening. In the Wuhan Han Show Theatre project, Qinglong Group perfectly realized the nearly sculptural red double-curved façade designed by Zaha Hadid Architects—a concentrated demonstration of these material foundations under top-tier manufacturing processes.
The primary condition for achieving complex double-curved shapes is that the material must be able to fill every corner of the mold like water. Through high-range water reducers and scientific particle gradation, UHPC achieves extremely high flowability (flow spread up to 600-700mm) and self-compaction even at a very low water-binder ratio. This means that under slight vibration or its own weight, UHPC slurry can fill any convex or concave surface in a double-curved mold without leaving dead zones, automatically expelling air bubbles without the need for intensive vibration (which could in fact cause uneven fiber distribution or mold displacement). This is the prerequisite for replicating complex shapes.
After filling the mold, the material must be able to "hold its ground," without deforming as its own weight causes it to flow or sag on vertical or inclined curved surfaces. UHPC has excellent thixotropy and cohesion. Once mixing and pouring stop, its viscosity rapidly recovers, forming sufficient structural strength to support its own weight and maintain the shape formed during casting. This "standing firm" characteristic makes it possible to produce complex vertical reliefs and inverted curved surfaces.
Double curvature is not only about macro-scale large curvature; it is often accompanied by micro-scale textures (such as wood grain, stone texture, or geometric engraving). UHPC slurry is fine and contains no large aggregates, allowing it to achieve molecular-level intimate contact with the mold surface and precisely replicate the fine textures on the mold. Whether it is natural stone veins transferred from silicone molds or precise geometric lines carved by CNC, UHPC can clearly "imprint" them all.
Shrinkage during hardening can distort shapes, and drying shrinkage can cause cracking. Through a low water-binder ratio and the addition of shrinkage-reducing components, UHPC keeps early plastic shrinkage and later drying shrinkage at an extremely low level (usually total shrinkage <800 microstrain). This means that from the moment of demolding, the component's shape and dimensions are highly stable, with no significant deformation or cracking due to shrinkage, ensuring that the shape finally installed on the wall is highly consistent with the design model.
In summary, UHPC's ability to achieve complex double-curved shapes is determined by its material nature as "highly moldable stone" or "liquid stone." By mastering the core properties of this material and combining them with high-precision digital modeling, CNC mold machining, and constant-temperature curing processes, Qinglong Group ultimately solidifies architects' boundless creativity into timeless architectural artworks.
