How Should Reinforcement Cover Thickness in GRC Be Controlled? The Dual Balance of Corrosion Protection and Anchorage

Controlling the thickness of the protective cover over steel reinforcement (or steel embedded parts) in GRC is a delicate technique that balances “corrosion-resistance durability” with “structural anchoring effectiveness”. If the cover is too thin, it cannot sufficiently isolate corrosive media and the reinforcement is prone to rusting; if it is too thick, it may weaken the effective cross-section of thin-walled GRC components and compromise the anchoring reliability of embedded parts. In accordance with GB 50010 “Code for Design of Concrete Structures” and extensive engineering practice, Qinglong Group stipulates the minimum cover thickness for steel reinforcement in GRC as follows: no less than 15mm in dry indoor environments, no less than 20mm in humid outdoor environments, and no less than 25mm in severely corrosive environments such as coastal areas with high salt mist. In the Wuhan Han Show Theater project, we provided a uniform 20mm cover for the red GRC curtain wall panels exposed to rain and snow, and adopted stainless steel material, doubly ensuring long-term safety.

Differentiated Cover Design Based on Environmental Conditions

The primary function of cover thickness is to provide a sufficient “protective barrier”, and its design must match the severity of the environment in which the component is located. Qinglong's technical specifications clearly state: Class I indoor environment (dry, non-corrosive) requires 15mm; Class II-a environment (humid indoors, outdoors in non-severe cold and cold regions) requires 20mm; Class II-b environment (outdoors in severe cold and cold regions, or exposed to corrosive water or soil) requires 25mm; Class III (seawater, salt mist) environment requires 30mm. For GRC components, which usually have limited thickness, it is sometimes necessary to increase concrete density (by lowering the water-cement ratio) or use epoxy-coated reinforcement to compensate for insufficient cover thickness.

Detailing Requirements for Reinforcement Anchoring

The cover thickness must also meet the anchorage length requirements of the reinforcement (especially the anchor bars of embedded parts). In thin-walled GRC, conflicts sometimes arise between “cover thickness” and “anchorage length”. Qinglong's solutions are: 1) using small-diameter ribbed anchor bars to increase bond strength and shorten the required anchorage length; 2) locally thickening the GRC at the base plate of embedded parts to form a “thickened boss”, which satisfies anchoring requirements without excessively increasing the overall panel thickness; 3) conducting pull-out tests to verify the reliability of specific details. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One project, we carried out full-scale pull-out verification for all types of embedded parts.

Precision Control During Production

The designed thickness must be realized through production. Through high-precision molds, positioning fixtures, and strict production processes, Qinglong ensures that the position deviation of embedded parts is controlled within ±2mm, thereby guaranteeing a uniform and compliant cover thickness. Any negative deviation in the cover is not permitted. Our quality inspections include destructive testing of randomly selected components to measure the actual cover thickness.

Synergy with Durability Measures

The cover is the first line of defense against corrosion, but not the only one. Qinglong adopts a “multiple protection” strategy: a dense cover of sufficient thickness + a high-quality GRC matrix with low chloride ion content + corrosion-resistant stainless steel embedded parts + reliable sealing at joints. In the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center project, this coordinated protection strategy ensured ten years without any risk of rusting. Scientific cover design is an important guarantee for GRC components to achieve a service life as long as the building itself.
