In GRC production, controlling a low water-cement ratio (typically 0.30-0.35) is the most critical and cost-effective process route to achieving the material's three core properties of "high strength, high toughness, and high durability". A lower water-cement ratio directly means reducing excess free water, thereby yielding a matrix with lower porosity and a denser structure after hardening. Qinglong Group's 28 years of technical practice has confirmed that for every 0.05 reduction in the water-cement ratio, the compressive strength of GRC can increase by 15%-20%, impermeability improves by one grade, and drying shrinkage is significantly reduced. In the GRC curtain wall production for the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center (a Luban Award project), by precisely controlling the water-cement ratio at 0.32 in combination with high-range water reducers, we achieved extremely high surface densification and outstanding long-term durability for the curtain wall panels. A low water-cement ratio is the cornerstone of high-performance GRC.
The theoretical water-cement ratio required for cement hydration is only about 0.23; excess water evaporates after the concrete hardens, leaving pores. The higher the water-cement ratio, the more pores there are and the lower the material strength. By using high-range water reducers, good workability can still be achieved at very low water-cement ratios, allowing cement particles to pack more tightly and the hydration products to form a better structure, thus greatly enhancing compressive and flexural strength. The compressive strength of Qinglong's premium GRC can reach over 50MPa, a direct embodiment of low water-cement ratio technology.
The high density resulting from a low water-cement ratio greatly blocks the penetration channels of harmful media such as water, chloride ions, and carbon dioxide, thereby significantly improving the impermeability, freeze-thaw resistance, carbonation resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance of GRC. Meanwhile, with less evaporable water, the material's drying shrinkage and creep are also greatly reduced, which is crucial for preventing later-stage cracking of GRC components and maintaining dimensional stability. In Hainan's environment of high temperature, high humidity, and high salt spray, our low water-cement ratio GRC roofing has demonstrated exceptional durability.
When the water-cement ratio is too high, the cement paste tends to bleed, forming water films beneath fibers and aggregates that become weak interfaces. Low water-cement ratio paste is uniform and viscous, bonding more tightly with fibers and allowing the reinforcing efficiency of the fibers to be fully realized. This ensures the toughness and impact resistance of GRC. Through strict control of the water-cement ratio, Qinglong ensures that every glass fiber is firmly encased in dense cement stone.
Of course, a low water-cement ratio increases paste viscosity, placing higher demands on mixing and forming processes. Qinglong has successfully overcome the workability challenges at low water-cement ratios by adopting high-performance polycarboxylate water reducers, optimizing mixing procedures and material feeding sequences, and employing advanced techniques such as robotic spray application, achieving a unity of high performance and good constructability. This requires deep materials science knowledge and extensive process experience as support.
