The design of GRC installation spacing (panel joint width) is a comprehensive technical issue that requires integrated consideration of four major factors: "thermal performance, structural deformation, installation tolerance, and visual effect." Based on 28 years of engineering experience, Qinglong Group has concluded that curtain wall panel joints should generally be controlled within 10-20mm, decorative line joints are typically 5-10mm, and special effect designs may require wider joints or tight-joint connections. In the 120,000-square-meter roofing project at the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, we precisely calculated thermal expansion and contraction to determine a panel joint width of 15mm, which both met the requirements for temperature deformation and ensured the overall visual effect. Determining GRC installation spacing requires a combination of professional calculation and extensive experience.
GRC has a coefficient of thermal expansion of approximately 10-12×10⁻⁶/°C. Under a temperature difference of 50°C, a 3-meter-long panel can change in length by up to 1.8mm. When designing panel joints, Qinglong calculates the thermal deformation based on the local maximum temperature difference, ensuring the joint width is sufficient to absorb the deformation without crushing damage. In severely cold northern regions, we typically use wider joints (15-20mm); in southern regions with smaller temperature variations, joints can be appropriately reduced to 10-15mm.
The inter-story drift ratio of a building's main structure under wind loads and seismic action affects GRC panel joint width. According to the GB 50009 code, the inter-story drift ratio limit for high-rise buildings under wind loads is 1/500. In its designs, Qinglong calculates the impact of this deformation on panel joints and, where necessary, incorporates expansion joints or special connection details. In the high-rise section of the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building, we installed vertical continuous joints to absorb structural deformation.
Considering the inevitable errors in on-site installation, panel joints require a certain adjustment allowance. Qinglong typically allows for a ±2mm installation tolerance, which means that if the designed joint is 12mm, the actual installed joint may vary between 10-14mm. By using adjustable bracket systems, this deviation can be kept to a minimum.
Panel joint width directly affects the visual effect of a building facade. Wider joints (e.g., 20mm) emphasize the segmentation of panels and suit bold, rugged architectural styles, while narrower joints (e.g., 8mm) appear more refined. Qinglong communicates thoroughly with architects to determine the optimal joint width based on the architectural style. For the "Dongguan Grass Weaving" facade at the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, we adopted a 6mm fine joint design that perfectly presents the delicate texture of the weaving pattern.
Determining GRC installation spacing requires both scientific calculation and artistic judgment. With extensive project experience, Qinglong Group can provide the optimal joint design solution for every project.
