GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement) and GRG (Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum) are two commonly used decorative materials. Their core performance differences stem from the fundamental distinction in "matrix materials", resulting in sharp contrasts in "strength and hardness, weather resistance, fire performance, plasticity, and applicable scenarios". As an enterprise with full-chain service capabilities for both GRC and GRG, Qinglong Group, based on 28 years of project practice, summarizes the differences between the two as follows: GRC uses cement as its cementitious material, featuring high strength (flexural strength 10-20MPa), good weather resistance (suitable for outdoor use), and strong durability; GRG uses high-strength α-gypsum as its cementitious material, featuring excellent plasticity (capable of extremely thin and highly complex shapes), high surface smoothness, and outstanding fire performance (Class A non-combustible), but poor water resistance (mainly used indoors). In the Wuhan Han Show Theater project, GRC was selected for the outdoor red curtain wall to withstand wind and rain, while GRG was used for the intricate indoor ceilings to achieve fine detailing — a perfect example of matching material properties with the use environment. Choosing the right material is half the battle for project success.
Since GRC is cement-based, its compressive strength, flexural strength, and toughness are all superior to GRG, enabling it to better withstand external forces such as impact and wind loads. Its weather resistance is excellent, able to resist UV rays, rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles, with a design service life of over 50 years, making it an ideal choice for outdoor curtain walls, roofing, and landscape components. GRG's strength drops significantly when exposed to water, so its use is strictly limited to dry indoor environments.
GRG slurry has good fluidity and can be cast into extremely complex and delicate shapes with a minimum thickness of 5-6mm. After demolding, its surface is highly smooth and can be directly painted, making it very suitable for high-standard interior decoration needs, such as complex ceilings, walls, and artistic components in theaters, hotels, and commercial atriums. GRC also has strong molding capability, but its surface fineness is generally not as good as GRG's.
Both GRC and GRG are inorganic materials that meet the Class A non-combustible standard. In a fire, GRG can release crystallized water, providing a certain flame-retardant and cooling effect. Both are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Moreover, GRG's gypsum base material inherently has a moisture-regulating "breathing" function, which plays a positive role in improving the indoor microclimate.
Generally speaking, GRG's material cost is slightly higher than GRC's, but its excellent formability can reduce later grinding and polishing processes. The key to selection lies in the application scenario: outdoor, semi-outdoor, or high-humidity areas (such as bathrooms) must use GRC; for dry indoor areas, especially when pursuing extremely complex shapes and smooth surfaces, GRG can be the preferred choice. Qinglong Group can provide customers with professional material selection advice.
Understanding the core differences between GRC and GRG helps make the most scientific and economical choices in projects. With a deep understanding of both materials, Qinglong Group can provide the optimal decorative solution for any space.
