Achieving "Zaha-style" (Zaha Hadid style) GRC forms means mastering "continuously flowing spatial curved surfaces, sharp geometric turns, complexity with no standard units, and extreme requirements for light and shadow"; its construction is a test of ultimate capability across the entire chain of design, manufacturing, and installation. Through project practices carrying the genes of Zaha Hadid Architects, such as the Nanjing Youth Olympic Centre and the Changsha Meixi Lake International Culture & Arts Centre, Qinglong Group has summarized four major construction challenges: the ultra-high precision requirements of 3D spatial positioning and surveying/layout; cross-disciplinary coordination and collision avoidance on complex curved surfaces; deformation control of irregular-shaped components under hoisting and temporary support; and ultimately achieving the seamless, smooth visual effects required by the design. In the Changsha Meixi Lake project, nearly 10,000 GRC double-curved panels, with no two alike, were managed through full-process digital management, with final assembly deviations controlled within ±3mm, recreating the flowing form of a "hibiscus flower". Challenging non-linear forms requires linear, ultimate precision.
Traditional two-dimensional plane layout methods completely fail. A high-precision 3D spatial control network must be established, using total stations or 3D laser scanners to assign precise spatial coordinates (X, Y, Z) and angles to every uniquely shaped component. During installation, real-time measurement feedback and dynamic adjustment are required. We use robotic total stations to control installation accuracy at the ±2mm level.
In "Zaha-style" forms, GRC curtain walls are deeply interwoven with structure, curtain wall windows, lighting, drainage, floodlighting and other systems, making the interfaces extremely complex. Comprehensive clash detection and installation sequence simulation must be carried out in the BIM model to resolve conflicts in advance. Strong general contractor coordination is required on site to ensure that all disciplines proceed in an orderly manner according to the digital script.
Each panel differs in center of gravity and stiffness, requiring individual calculation of lifting points and the design of dedicated lifting devices and installation frames. The temporary support system must allow multi-degree-of-freedom fine-tuning to ensure that components are in their design positions before final fixing, with internal stresses released. We developed an adaptive hydraulic support system that successfully solved the installation challenges of large cantilevered double-curved panels.
The design pursues a "seamless" sense of flow, yet in reality it is assembled from thousands upon thousands of panels. This places nearly exacting demands on panel fabrication precision, joint width control, and continuous transition of surface textures. Through high-precision molds, rigorous production control, and fine treatment at the joints (such as graduated sealant thickness), we visually bridged the physical joints and achieved the wholeness of the design.
Therefore, undertaking "Zaha-style" GRC projects is a comprehensive test of a company's overall technical strength, project management capability, and artistic perception. Qinglong Group, with successful practices in multiple landmark projects, has proven its ability to master such world-class complex projects.
