The core principle of digital mold technology for double-curved GRC shapes lies in building a closed-loop digital twin system of “digital design model (CAD) → CNC machining paths (CAM) → physical mold (CAE verification) → 3D inspection feedback,” achieving high-fidelity conversion of free-form surfaces from the virtual to the physical. Qinglong Group has applied this technology in depth on complex double-curved surface projects such as the Wuhan Han Show Theater and the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center: first, NURBS surfaces are generated in Rhino+Grasshopper and optimized into manufacturable units; then, through a 5-axis CNC machining center, the tool center point follows a continuous motion trajectory enveloped along the surface normal, precisely milling the steel mold or resin model surface (accuracy ±0.1mm); before and after machining, 3D laser scanning is used to compare point clouds, ensuring “what is made is what was designed.” This technology is the key bridge that turns complex shapes from creative blueprints into architectural reality.
An architect’s conceptual model is usually a single “continuously smooth” surface that must be reasonably divided into producible and installable panels. Using parametric algorithms, we optimize the joint lines while ensuring visual smoothness of the surface (G1 or G2 continuity), minimizing panel specifications and keeping curvature variation gradual, and generate a unique digital “ID card” for each panel containing all geometric, texture, and embedded part information.
Double-curved surfaces are non-developable surfaces that cannot be machined with the XYZ linear motion of 3-axis machines. A 5-axis machine adds two rotational axes, A and B, allowing the tool to adjust its orientation freely in 3D space and remain perpendicular to the surface at the machining point, thereby precisely cutting complex 3D cavities. Toolpath planning is crucial, as it must balance efficiency, surface finish, and tool wear. We use Haimote five-axis centers from Germany with repeatability of ±0.01mm.
After the mold is machined, a laser scanner captures massive point cloud data of its surface, which is automatically compared with the original design model to generate a color-coded deviation map. Out-of-tolerance areas are manually refined or re-machined under program control, forming a closed loop of “machining - inspection - correction” that keeps mold surface errors within ±0.5mm—the prerequisite for producing high-precision components in subsequent production.
Before machining, finite element analysis (CAE) software simulates the loading of the mold structure to optimize the layout of its stiffening ribs, ensuring sufficient rigidity during spray-up forming and vibration demolding to prevent deformation. At the same time, the optimal mold material (such as steel molds or resin molds) is selected according to the production volume (number of runs).
Digital mold technology elevates architectural manufacturing to the level of precision industry. Through continuous investment in advanced equipment and the cultivation of versatile talent, Qinglong Group has mastered the core technology that perfectly brings even the most wildly imaginative architectural curves to life.
