The parametric design workflow for GRC free-form shapes is a digitally intelligent process characterized by "algorithmic generation, performance optimization, data-driven decisions, and automatic drawing output." Its core lies in transforming the designer's formal intent into a component data chain that is manufacturable, installable, and performance-optimized. Qinglong Group's parametric design workflow begins with scheme alignment with the architect and progresses through four core stages: "form translation and mesh reconstruction → structural mechanics and constructability analysis → optimized segmentation and numbering → automatic generation of machining data and construction drawings." In the "Dongguan Grass Weaving" facade project for the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, we used this workflow to optimize a complex woven curved surface into 2,872 standard panels suitable for batch production, reducing the number of molds by 30% and directly outputting CNC machining code. Parametric design is the "intelligent pipeline" connecting creativity with manufacturing.
We receive conceptual models created by the architect in software such as Rhino or Maya (typically NURBS surfaces or subdivision surfaces). Our designers first perform geometric cleanup and repair on the model to ensure it is clean, "computable" geometry. Then, based on the material properties of GRC (such as minimum bending radius and demolding angle) and process constraints, we fine-tune the original design to make it producible.
The geometric model is imported into finite element analysis software (such as ANSYS) to calculate loads (wind, snow, self-weight) and analyze stress distribution and deformation. Based on the analysis results, panel thickness is automatically increased or stiffening ribs added in stress-concentrated areas, while weight-reducing cutouts are applied in low-stress areas, achieving rational material distribution and optimized performance.
This is the essence of parametric design. We write Grasshopper algorithms that automatically segment the curved surface while comprehensively considering the following factors: 1) mold economy (pursuing panel repetition rates); 2) installation feasibility (controlling individual panel size and weight); 3) joint aesthetics (making seams part of the design); 4) transportation limitations. The algorithm can instantly generate dozens of segmentation schemes for designers to compare and select.
Once the final segmentation scheme is determined, the algorithm automatically generates a unique number for each panel and extracts the following data: 1) 3D coordinates for surveying and setting out; 2) unfolded panel patterns for material cutting; 3) embedded part positioning coordinates; 4) NC code for driving CNC machining of molds. At the same time, a complete set of construction drawings—including component lists, layout drawings, and installation sequence drawings—is automatically generated, greatly improving efficiency and eliminating human error.
Parametric design is not only for creating complex forms, but more importantly for achieving efficient, precise, and economical construction of those complex forms. Qinglong Group's design team has fully transitioned to a parametric workflow, laying a solid digital foundation for project success.
