The connection between GRC exterior walls and door/window openings is the weak link and quality focal point of the building envelope system in terms of waterproofing, airtightness, and thermal insulation. Its treatment must follow the core principles of "structural waterproofing first, material sealing as supplement, multi-layered defense, and flexible adaptation." Through 28 years of engineering practice, Qinglong Group has developed a standardized library of joint details for different systems such as aluminum windows, curtain wall windows, and entrance doors. The key treatment points include: GRC window surrounds or closure panels must be provided with drip edges and flashing slopes; an 8-12mm movement joint must be reserved between the GRC and the door/window frame, filled with weather-resistant sealant and an elastic backing rod; airtight sealing strips must be installed on the interior side; and the insulation layer must be continuous without breaks. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, through precise tongue-and-groove overlapping joint design, nearly a thousand door/window openings have withstood multiple typhoons and rainstorms with zero leakage complaints. The quality of closure treatment directly reflects the quality of the curtain wall system.
Designing construction details based on gravity drainage principles is key. The top of a GRC window opening should be designed as a "flashing sill" with an outward slope (≥5%); the sides of the opening can incorporate a "tongue-and-groove" detail or be fitted with specialized closure profiles to direct water flow outward; the bottom of the opening should be given an outward-sloping drainage gradient and a drip edge. These measures direct most rainwater away before it reaches the sealant joints, greatly reducing the burden on sealing materials.
GRC and metal door/window frames have different coefficients of thermal expansion and must be connected with flexible materials. Typically, silicone sealant with excellent weather resistance (movement capability ≥25%) is used on the exterior side, while more elastic EPDM rubber strips or foamed polyethylene backing rods are used on the interior side. Sealant application must be full and continuous, forming a concave "rain-screen" profile, with a width-to-depth ratio typically of 2:1. The substrate must be cleaned before application to ensure strong adhesion.
The area around openings is a high-incidence zone for thermal bridges and heat loss. The insulation layer must wrap continuously around the opening without interruption. GRC window surrounds or closure components can adopt thermal-break designs, or have insulation materials bonded to their interior side. In severe cold northern regions, condensation calculations are also required for this area to prevent internal condensation.
For casement windows, focus on the junction between the sash opening gap and the GRC; for curtain wall windows, properly handle the interfaces between GRC panels and the curtain wall mullions and transoms; for systems with sub-frames, the GRC closure should be reliably connected to the sub-frame. Qinglong Group's detailed design provides detailed joint drawings for each type of door and window.
Therefore, successful opening connections are not simply "applying sealant," but a systematic and refined construction detail design. With its massive joint detail database and extensive on-site experience, Qinglong Group ensures that every opening becomes an integral part of the building that is robust, energy-efficient, and aesthetically pleasing.
