Preventing freeze-thaw damage to GRC exterior walls in severe cold regions is a systematic engineering effort targeting the damage chain of "water, pores, and ice expansion." A quadruple defense system must be established: "frost-resistant materials as the foundation, structural waterproofing as the key, construction and curing as the guarantee, and regular maintenance as the extension." The successful practices of Qinglong Group in landmark projects in severe cold regions, such as the Harbin Grand Theatre and Shenyang Culture and Art Center, demonstrate that by controlling the water absorption rate of GRC below 6%, raising the frost resistance grade to F200 or above, and combining this with sound structural drainage design, the walls can fully withstand repeated freeze-thaw cycles at temperatures as low as -30°C. In a project in Harbin, our GRC components have endured 15 severe winters with no surface spalling and a strength retention rate exceeding 90%. Frost resistance is not a single indicator; it is the combination of materials science and building physics.
Freeze-thaw damage occurs only when water penetrates and reaches saturation. Therefore, enhancing the impermeability of the GRC matrix is the core. Through a low water-binder ratio (≤0.36), high silica fume content (≥20%), and high-range water reducers, we produce GRC with high density and low porosity, significantly reducing its water absorption and saturation levels. Meanwhile, tiny, uniform, closed air bubbles are introduced under strict control (air content 4-6%), providing expansion space for freezing water and buffering internal stress. We require that GRC used in severe cold regions pass at least 150 rapid freeze-thaw cycle tests.
Even the most frost-resistant material will fail under prolonged soaking. Structural design must ensure that water does not accumulate. All horizontal surfaces (such as window sills and string courses) must have a drainage slope of no less than 3%; panel joints must use low-temperature-resistant (-40°C) silicone sealant, with full and complete sealant joints; drip edges must be installed at panel bottoms. Avoid "thermal bridge" structures to prevent localized condensation and water accumulation.
Cracks and voids produced during the construction phase are fast channels for moisture intrusion. We require that during winter construction, the material temperature be no lower than 5°C, and antifreeze-type admixtures be used. The curing phase must ensure adequate moist curing to promote cement hydration and form a dense surface layer; immediately after demolding, a curing agent should be applied or hydrophobic treatment performed.
Establish an inspection system for spring and autumn, focusing on joint sealing integrity after snowmelt and the completeness of surface coatings. Any micro-cracks found should be promptly sealed with elastic sealant. The surface hydrophobic layer should be renewed regularly (e.g., every 5 years) to maintain its protective effectiveness.
In severe cold regions, any neglected detail can be amplified by the harsh winter into damage. Through systematic material optimization, structural design, and process control, Qinglong Group provides buildings in frozen lands with a reliable "insulating coat" against the cold.
