Improving the abrasion resistance of GRC panels is essential for applications such as flooring, stair treads, and wall wainscoting in high-traffic areas, and requires a coordinated multi-path approach of "surface hardening treatment, aggregate optimization, fiber reinforcement, and mix proportion design." Abrasion resistance is typically measured by wear groove length or wear loss, and premium GRC can be several times more abrasion-resistant than ordinary concrete. By adding abrasion-resistant aggregates (such as quartz sand and emery), applying surface hardeners (such as silane impregnation and epoxy coatings), and optimizing fiber distribution, Qinglong Group has reduced the wear loss of GRC panels used in large shopping mall flooring to below 0.15g/cm², far exceeding general requirements. Improving abrasion resistance is key to expanding the application fields of GRC.
Brushing or impregnating the surface of GRC panels with a specialized abrasion-resistant hardener can significantly improve surface hardness and wear resistance. For example, a penetrating liquid hardener can be used, whose active ingredients penetrate into the concrete, react with cement hydration products, and form a hard gel that blocks capillary pores, increasing surface hardness (Mohs hardness up to 7-8). For extreme abrasion requirements, epoxy mortar or polyurethane coatings can be applied. We recommend different surface treatment solutions based on the wear type (such as impact wear or sliding wear).
The hardness of aggregates is the first line of defense against wear. In the surface layer of GRC, using high-hardness aggregates such as quartz sand (Mohs hardness 7) and emery (silicon carbide, Mohs hardness 9.5) can greatly improve abrasion resistance. Aggregate gradation is also important; continuous gradation forms a denser skeleton structure. We sometimes adopt a "double-layer" process, with an abrasion-resistant aggregate layer on the surface and ordinary GRC underneath, balancing performance and cost.
Glass fibers or synthetic fibers form a three-dimensional network in the matrix, effectively suppressing the propagation of microcracks during wear and preventing the spalling of material particles, thereby improving abrasion resistance, especially resistance to impact wear. Fiber content, length, and distribution uniformity are crucial. Qinglong Group uses robotic spray processes to ensure uniform fiber distribution and achieve optimal toughening effects.
A low water-binder ratio and high cement content (within reasonable limits) can form a harder cement matrix. Adequate curing, especially early moist curing, reduces surface microcracks and improves the strength of the surface layer. Steam curing contributes to early strength development and has a positive effect on abrasion resistance.
Through systematic material design and surface treatment, the abrasion resistance of GRC can meet the vast majority of demanding service environments. Qinglong Group is committed to providing customers with solutions that are both aesthetically pleasing and durable.
