Humid environments (such as coastal areas, rainy regions, basements, and pool surroundings) pose a serious challenge to the long-term durability of GRC decorative panels, requiring a systematic reinforcement approach that integrates four aspects: "material modification, structural waterproofing, surface protection, and maintenance management". For projects in high-humidity, high-heat regions such as Hainan and the Pearl River Delta, Qinglong Group has developed specialized protection strategies: at the material level, a low-alkali cement system blended with silica fume (≥25%) and high-zirconia alkali-resistant fibers (ZrO₂≥18%) are used; at the structural level, cavity ventilation and unobstructed drainage are ensured, with weather-resistant sealing at panel joints; a hydrophobic protective agent is applied to surfaces; and a regular inspection system is established. In a seaside commercial project on Hengqin, Zhuhai, through these comprehensive measures, our GRC decorative components have served 8 years in a year-round high-salt-spray environment without efflorescence, mildew, or noticeable strength degradation. The test of humid environments demands a systematic solution.
Humid environments accelerate all harmful reactions. Low-alkali sulphoaluminate cement or ordinary cement blended with a large amount of mineral powder/fly ash must be used to reduce the alkalinity of the pore solution and protect the glass fibers. The chloride ion content of aggregates must be strictly controlled (≤0.01%), and the use of sea sand is strictly prohibited. Qinglong Group also adds migrating corrosion inhibitors to its formulations to provide additional protection for any metal embedded parts.
The installation structure must eliminate water accumulation and trapped moisture. Open or pressure-equalized cavity designs are adopted to ensure that the cavity behind panels communicates with outdoor air, with drainage holes at the bottom. The insulation layer between panels and walls must use hydrophobic materials (such as hydrophobic rock wool), wrapped with a waterproof and vapor-permeable membrane. All connectors are made of stainless steel (grade 316 or above) or hot-dip galvanized with powder coating.
Applying silicone or fluorocarbon-based hydrophobic protective agents to the GRC panel surface gives it a "lotus effect", making it difficult for water droplets to adhere and penetrate, while also reducing dirt accumulation. For areas that may contact liquid water (such as pools and water features), epoxy resin coating can be considered for sealing treatment. The protective agent should be reapplied periodically (typically every 5-8 years) depending on its durability.
Establish a regular inspection system (recommended once a year), focusing on checking the aging of joint sealants, whether drainage holes are blocked, and whether there are fine cracks on the surface. Repair any localized coating failure promptly. Qinglong Group can provide customers with long-term maintenance service plans.
In humid environments, any single protective measure may fail; only a systematic solution can ensure that GRC decorative panels remain as good as new over time. With rich engineering experience in harsh environments, Qinglong Group provides customers with all-round protection solutions.
