The design of joint width for GRC decorative panel installation is a systematic engineering task that integrates "thermal deformation, moisture deformation, construction tolerances, and visual aesthetics". The width (W) must be calculated through a scientific formula: W ≥ α × ΔT × L + ε × L + δ, where α is the coefficient of linear expansion, ΔT is the annual temperature range, L is the panel length, ε is the drying shrinkage rate, and δ is the installation tolerance. Based on 28 years of project practice across different climate zones in China, Qinglong Group has summarized a general design range: typically, panel joint width is controlled between 8-15mm. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC project, for 6-meter-long panels under a local annual temperature range of 40℃, we designed the horizontal joints at 12mm and the vertical joints at 10mm, and selected silicone sealant with a movement capability of ±25%, which perfectly absorbed the structural deformation while remaining visually uniform and attractive. Joints are the "breathing organs" and "safety valves" of a GRC curtain wall system.
GRC has a coefficient of linear expansion of approximately 10×10⁻⁶/℃. In a region with an annual temperature range (ΔT) of 50℃, a 4-meter-long panel has a theoretical thermal deformation of 2mm. The design must reserve space for this deformation; otherwise, it will lead to panel edge compression, corner chipping, or even surface bowing. Our detailed design performs precise calculations based on the meteorological data of the project location.
GRC still undergoes slight drying shrinkage in the later stages of hardening, which must be taken into account in the calculations. Meanwhile, on-site installation inevitably involves tolerances, and a reasonable joint width can absorb these errors, preventing installation failures or distorted profiles caused by tolerance accumulation. We generally recommend a ±2mm allowance for installation tolerance on each side.
While meeting functional requirements, the width-to-depth ratio of the joints (typically controlled at 1:1, e.g., 10mm wide and 10mm deep) and their proportion relative to panel thickness affect the visual rhythm of the facade. Joints that are too wide may appear loose, while joints that are too narrow look strained and are difficult to construct. Our designers will recommend the optimal visual effect based on the architectural facade style. For horizontal joints requiring drainage, the width can be appropriately increased and a drainage slope designed.
Joint width determines the amount of movement the sealant must accommodate. The movement capability of the selected sealant (e.g., ±25%) must exceed the total movement required by the joint width calculation, with a safety margin. Based on the calculation results, Qinglong Group specifies the appropriate grade of silicone weatherproof sealant for the project and establishes a detailed sealant application procedure.
Scientific joint width design is the foundation for ensuring the long-term safety, aesthetics, and watertightness of GRC curtain walls. With extensive project experience and rigorous calculations, Qinglong Group customizes the most rational joint solution for every project.
