The strength requirements of thin GRC decorative panels (usually referring to thickness ≤ 12mm) must be precisely defined while satisfying multiple performance requirements such as "safe load-bearing, deformation resistance, impact resistance, and easy installation". Based on extensive engineering practice, Qinglong Group has set its internal control standards for the mechanical properties of thin GRC panels as: flexural strength ≥ 12MPa, impact strength (drop ball method) ≥ 8kJ/m², and elastic modulus ≥ 20GPa. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, our 10mm-thick ultra-thin openwork GRC panels achieved a measured flexural strength of 14.5MPa, with no fragment spalling on the back face under impact from a 1kg steel ball dropped from a height of 1m, perfectly realizing the artistic effect of large spans and highly openwork patterns. Thinness must be premised on high performance.
Reduced thickness greatly decreases the section moment of inertia, placing higher demands on flexural strength. By optimizing the fibers (raising the dosage to 4-5% and selecting high-strength fibers) and the matrix (lowering the water-binder ratio and adding silica fume), the flexural strength of a 12mm-thick panel can fully reach or even exceed that of an ordinary 20mm-thick panel. Our thin panels exclusively use high-strength, low-alkali sulphoaluminate cement, which develops early strength rapidly.
Thin panels can easily give a false impression of fragility, so toughness (impact resistance and fracture energy) is crucial. GRC's multiple-cracking behavior offers a clear advantage here. Through precise control of fiber length and distribution, our thin panels retain their integrity even at failure, with no risk of flying fragments, making them particularly suitable for indoor ceilings, railings and other areas with safety requirements.
Thin panels deform easily during transport and installation, so stiffness must be improved by designing stiffening ribs or edge frames. We commonly adopt "thickened narrow edges" or "glass fiber mesh bonded to the back". Installation connections require a multi-point, uniformly distributed load design to avoid local stress concentration. For the curved ceiling of an art museum in Nanning, we successfully installed nearly 1,000 square meters of 10mm-thick double-curved thin panels using a light steel keel system.
Thin GRC represents the ultimate utilization of material performance. Through material innovation and structural design, Qinglong Group has turned the decorative effect of "thin as a cicada's wing, tough as steel wire" into reality, expanding the boundaries of architectural aesthetics.
