Ensuring the UV resistance of GRC for decorative panels requires a systematic approach built on four pathways: substrate material durability, enhanced surface protection, mix optimization, and quality testing. The main components of GRC (cement, sand, and alkali-resistant glass fiber) are all inorganic materials with excellent inherent UV stability; its weathering challenges mainly arise from potential aging under the combined effects of UV radiation, moisture, and temperature. Through 28 years of tracking outdoor projects and QUV accelerated aging tests, Qinglong Group has confirmed that adding active admixtures such as silica fume to reduce porosity, selecting high-zirconia alkali-resistant fibers (ZrO₂≥16%), and applying a UV-resistant protective coating (such as fluorocarbon paint) to the surface can ensure that GRC decorative panels retain ≥85% of their strength after 20 years of outdoor use, with a color change of ΔE≤5.0. In the red curtain wall project of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, we used integral mineral coloring with a fluorocarbon topcoat; after 8 years of use, the color remains vibrant, with a ΔE of only 2.1. Weather resistance is the guardian of a material's long-term value.
UV radiation does not directly damage cement paste, but it accelerates the aging of certain organic components and acts synergistically with moisture. Therefore, increasing matrix density is key. Qinglong GRC uses a low water-binder ratio (≤0.38) and a silica fume addition (≥20%) to greatly reduce capillary pores, blocking the intrusion of moisture and harmful media, and fundamentally delaying aging in any form. High-zirconia fibers ensure the stability of the reinforcement system under long-term outdoor conditions.
For projects with vibrant colors or extremely high color-retention requirements, applying a weather-resistant coating to the surface is the most direct and effective measure. We recommend fluorocarbon paint or polysiloxane coatings, which offer a UV-resistant service life of 10-15 years. Coatings not only retain color but also provide water repellency, reducing dirt adhesion. Coatings should be inspected and renewed periodically (e.g., every 8-10 years).
Qinglong Group conducts QUV accelerated aging tests (typically 1000 hours equivalent to 1-2 years of outdoor exposure) on every batch of GRC products for outdoor use, testing changes in color, gloss, and strength. Meanwhile, we maintain archives of completed projects and conduct regular follow-up visits to collect aging data in real environments, forming a closed loop for continuous improvement of product weather resistance.
Ensuring the UV resistance of GRC is a whole-process endeavor spanning materials, design, construction, and maintenance. With a deep understanding of materials science and long-term data accumulation, Qinglong Group ensures that outdoor GRC decorative panels stand the test of time.
