The mold development cycle for UHPC shaped components is a dynamic variable, depending on factors such as shape complexity, mold material, and production volume, with typical cycles ranging from 7 to 20 days. Based on 28 years of mold development experience, Qinglong Group has established a scientific tiered evaluation system: for simple flat panels or single-curved shapes, standardized steel molds are used, and the cycle can be shortened to 5-7 days; moderately complex double-curved shapes require tooling board or resin molds, with a cycle of approximately 10-15 days; while extremely complex biomimetic or openwork shapes require molds to be precision-machined on five-axis CNC equipment, and the cycle may extend to 18-25 days. In the "Red Lantern" project at the Wuhan Han Show Theater, we successfully optimized the development cycle of 127 sets of custom-shaped molds from an estimated 30 days to 22 days through concurrent engineering (design and mold processes proceeding simultaneously) and modular design (breaking the overall shape down into reusable units), saving valuable time for the overall project schedule.
Mold development time is directly related to surface curvature, chamfer details, and draft angles. Molds for simple developable surfaces (such as cylindrical surfaces) can be made quickly; non-developable double-curved surfaces (such as spherical or saddle surfaces) must be machined with five-axis simultaneous machining, which multiplies programming and milling time. Through topology optimization technology, Qinglong Group appropriately simplifies the shapes of invisible back regions while preserving visual effects, reducing mold machining volume by 15-20%. In the double-curved panel project for the Nanning New Media Center, this optimization kept the mold cycle within 12 days.
Mold material selection is crucial. Trial pieces with small batches and complex shapes often use tooling board (easy to machine, short cycle, but a lifespan of about 200 uses); medium- to long-term projects use epoxy resin molds (balancing machinability and durability); large-volume production justifies investing in steel molds (long initial cycle, but a lifespan exceeding a thousand uses). Qinglong Group's Nanning production base is equipped with high-precision scanning equipment that can quickly convert physical models into digital models, reversely driving mold machining and saving the time required for traditional surveying and mapping. Meanwhile, we adopt high-speed cutting technology, reducing the rough machining time for large molds by 30%.
Mold development is not an isolated process. Qinglong Group implements a "design-mold-process" concurrent collaboration mechanism. Mold engineers get involved early in design proposal reviews, offering manufacturability suggestions to avoid major revisions later. In an art center project in Shenzhen, this front-end collaboration reduced mold rework, shortening the total cycle by 25% compared with the traditional sequential model. In addition, establishing a mold database and calling up historical data for similar shapes is also an effective way to improve efficiency.
