The key to balancing aesthetics and structural safety in artistic UHPC forms lies in the “performance-based design” concept: through computational analysis, material innovation, and detailing optimization, the form itself becomes part of the load-bearing system rather than a mere decorative veneer. Qinglong Group successfully applied this concept in artistic projects such as the “Dongguan Sedge Weaving” facade of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center and the nebula form of the Shanghai Astronomy Museum. First, load simulations were carried out with finite element software (such as ANSYS) to find a balanced solution between visually focal areas and structural weak points; second, the material mix was optimized, adopting high-toughness UHPC (with added PVA fibers, fracture energy ≥25kJ/m²) to improve crack resistance; finally, concealed stiffening ribs or internal steel frames were installed to ensure safety redundancy. In the coral-inspired sculptures at Hainan Changying Global 100 Paradise, topology optimization distributed material along the principal stress paths, allowing the sculptures to maintain an extremely slender visual beauty while meeting wind load requirements, achieving a unity of art and safety.
Every artistic form must first pass the “calculation test.” We use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze wind pressure distribution and the finite element method (FEA) to calculate static and dynamic responses. For special areas such as cantilevers and openwork sections, safety factors are appropriately raised (e.g., from 2.0 to 2.5). In the design of the red hyperbolic curtain wall of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, calculations revealed stress concentration in certain areas, so plate thickness was locally increased or fibers more densely incorporated, rather than simply modifying the form, preserving the original design intent.
The high strength of UHPC (compressive strength ≥120MPa) and high toughness (flexural strength ≥15MPa) provide the material basis for artistic forms. Through mix design—for example, incorporating a hybrid of steel fibers and synthetic fibers—we achieve “strong yet tough” characteristics. For ultra-thin components (thickness <15mm), ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) supplemented with short chopped fibers is used, so that at the ultimate state it “cracks without shattering,” ensuring safety.
Clever design can transform structural requirements into aesthetic elements. For example, areas under higher loads can be shaped into rhythmic folds or ribs; a lightweight steel skeleton is embedded inside the component and then encased externally in UHPC, forming a composite structure. In the artistic sunshades of the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building, Qinglong Group adopted a hollow sandwich design that reduced weight while increasing stiffness, keeping the appearance light and fluid. The way to achieve balance lies in translating structural logic into design language.
