The design of joint width for GRC decorative panel installation is a systematic calculation process involving materials science, structural mechanics, and climate engineering—by no means a simple empirical value. Based on long-term deformation monitoring data from nationwide projects over 28 years, Qinglong Group has developed a scientific formula for calculating joint width: W = α × L × ΔT + δ. Here, α is the GRC coefficient of linear expansion (typically taken as 1.0×10⁻⁵/℃), L is the panel length, ΔT is the local annual extreme temperature difference, and δ is the construction installation tolerance (typically 3-5mm). In the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center project, for conditions of 12m-long panels and a 45℃ annual temperature difference, we designed horizontal joints at 15mm and vertical joints at 12mm, successfully handling 10 years of thermal expansion and contraction with no damage from compression anywhere. Joint design must dynamically account for multiple factors including temperature, humidity, and structural displacement.
The wet-dry and thermal deformation of GRC must be released through joints. Taking North China as an example, where the annual temperature difference can reach 60℃, a 6-meter-long panel can theoretically deform by up to 3.6mm due to heat. Qinglong Group recommends that the joint width for standard panels (length ≤4m) should be no less than 8mm, while extra-long panels (>4m) require dedicated calculation using the formula, along with deformation buffer construction.
The inter-story displacement of the main building structure under wind loads and seismic action, as well as the inevitable positioning errors during construction and installation, all require reserved space within the joint width. We typically add a 3-5mm construction compensation allowance on top of the calculated value and adopt a three-dimensionally adjustable connection hanger system to absorb these deformations.
Joints that are too wide compromise aesthetics, while overly narrow joints pose risks. Qinglong Group uses BIM technology for visual simulation to optimize joint layouts, cleverly integrating functional joints with decorative lines. At the same time, high-elasticity, aging-resistant silicone sealant (movement capability ≥25%) is used for filling to ensure joints remain sealed and waterproof under long-term deformation. Scientific design makes joints “invisible to the eye” yet “effective in reality.”
