For small and medium-sized projects, the mold cost of custom UHPC components often accounts for a high proportion of the total cost, becoming a key factor restricting project implementation. Through reasonable strategies, mold costs can be effectively reduced by 30%-50%. Qinglong Group has served numerous small and medium-sized projects and summarized the following four effective cost control recommendations: design optimization, mold sharing, process selection, and batch production.
First, optimization at the design source is fundamental. Early engagement with the technical team of the UHPC manufacturer is crucial. At the design stage, the shape should be simplified as much as possible, reducing unnecessary complex curved surfaces and chamfers. For example, optimize a double-curved surface into a developable single-curved surface, or change small-radius arcs to large radii. Avoid deep reliefs or negative-angle (undercut) shapes, as these often require designing complex combination molds or sacrificing mold life. Unify component dimensions and adopt identical or mirror-symmetrical modules wherever possible, so that one set of molds can produce a larger number of components. Designers can make fine adjustments for manufacturing economy while ensuring the artistic effect, which often brings significant mold cost savings.
Second, actively explore possibilities for mold sharing or reuse. Ask the manufacturer whether there are existing molds with similar shapes that can be modified and reused. Qinglong Group maintains a large mold database, and we can often adapt existing molds by modifying local dimensions or textures to match the needs of new projects, thereby greatly saving mold-making costs. In addition, consider using lower-cost mold materials. For small and medium batches (e.g., a few dozen pieces), high-strength fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) molds or high-quality resin molds are more economical choices than steel molds. Although they have a shorter lifespan (about 50-100 uses), they are sufficient to meet project needs, and the initial cost can be reduced by 40%-60%.
Third, choose a production process that is efficient and cost-controllable. For flat-panel or shallow-relief components, the premixed casting process usually has lower mold costs than the spraying process. Meanwhile, negotiate with the manufacturer to see whether a “one mold, multiple cavities” mold design can be adopted, i.e., arranging multiple component cavities in one large mold, casting them in a single pour to share the mold cost.
Finally, arrange the production schedule flexibly. If the project is not urgent, production can be scheduled during the manufacturer's off-season, and sometimes more favorable quotes can be obtained. Alternatively, if the project allows, components can be produced in batches, reducing the number of molds required for a one-time investment and easing financial pressure. Through the combined strategies above, small and medium-sized projects can fully enjoy the unique architectural expressiveness brought by custom UHPC components while controlling the budget. Qinglong Group's technical consultants are glad to get involved at the early stage of a project to provide clients with the most cost-effective integrated solution.
