The design of joint width during GRC decorative panel installation is a key aspect in ensuring the safety and aesthetics of curtain wall systems, requiring comprehensive consideration of multiple factors such as thermal deformation, construction tolerances, and seismic action. Based on 28 years of installation experience, Qinglong Group believes that the joint width of high-quality GRC curtain walls should be scientifically calculated according to panel dimensions, local temperature differences, and structural types, generally controlled within the range of 8-15mm, and adjustable up to 20mm in special cases. Through precise calculation and flexible connection design, deformation caused by thermal stress is kept within a safe range, preventing panel damage from compression or excessively wide joints that affect aesthetics.
Thermal deformation is the primary factor determining joint width. According to the linear expansion formula ΔL=α×L×ΔT, where the linear expansion coefficient of GRC is α=8-10×10⁻⁶/°C, and ΔT is taken as the local annual extreme temperature difference. In projects in Hainan's hot and humid regions, Qinglong Group set the joint width at 12mm through calculation (panel length ≤3m), allowing an expansion range of ±6mm. In severe cold northern regions, such as a project in Inner Mongolia, where the temperature difference reaches 70°C, the joint width was increased to 15mm. This scientific design prevents joint failure caused by thermal expansion and contraction.
Construction tolerances and structural deformation must also be considered. Installation tolerances are typically ±3mm, and the limit for structural story drift ratio is 1/300. In super high-rise projects, Qinglong Group compensates for these deviations through joint width. Joint material selection is critical: silicone sealant with a movement capability of ≥25% ensures free expansion and contraction. Joint design must also accommodate drainage, incorporating water guide plates or cavities to prevent water accumulation and leakage.
Balancing aesthetics and safety. Overly wide joints affect visual appearance, while overly narrow ones pose greater risks. Qinglong Group determines the optimal width through mock-up section testing. Joint width design is a systematic project requiring comprehensive consideration to ensure long-term reliability.
