The mechanism by which steam curing enhances UHPC performance lies in the accelerating effect of temperature on hydration reactions and the optimizing effect on the microstructure. Qinglong Group confirmed through microstructural testing that steam curing (60-80℃) increases C-S-H gel formation by 20%-30%, reduces porosity to below 5%, and refines the most probable pore size to the 50nm level. This is the fundamental reason for the improvement in strength and densification. A scientific steam curing regime is a key link in achieving high UHPC performance.
Temperature accelerates hydration reactions. At 60-80℃, the dissolution rate of cement particles increases 3-5 times, and C-S-H gel rapidly forms interwoven networks. Under a standard steam curing regime (2h temperature rise, 24h constant temperature, 2h cooling), Qinglong Group achieved a 1-day strength of UHPC reaching 70% of its 28-day strength, far exceeding the 40% achieved with ambient-temperature curing. Meanwhile, high temperature promotes the pozzolanic reaction of active admixtures such as silica fume, generating more C-S-H gel, filling capillary pores, and increasing density.
The microstructure is significantly optimized. Steam curing makes the pore distribution more uniform, with the proportion of harmful pores (>100nm) reduced from 15% to below 5%. Electron microscope scanning by Qinglong Group shows that the interfacial transition zone thickness of steam-cured UHPC is only 1/2 that of ambient-temperature samples, and the bond strength between fibers and the matrix increases by 25%. This structural improvement enhances impermeability, with the chloride ion diffusion coefficient reduced to 1.5×10⁻¹²m²/s. However, the steam curing regime must be controlled to avoid over-curing, which can cause microcracks.
