The performance differences between steam-free curing UHPC and steam-cured UHPC are mainly reflected in early strength development, microstructure, and long-term durability. Based on extensive comparative tests and engineering data, Qinglong Group considers that the 3-day strength of steam-cured UHPC can reach 70%-80% of its 28-day strength, while steam-free products only reach 50%-60%; however, through material optimization, high-quality steam-free UHPC can also achieve a 28-day strength above 120MPa with better volume stability. These differences stem from the accelerating effect of the curing process on hydration reactions, and the choice should be made reasonably according to project requirements.
The difference in strength development is significant. Steam curing (60-80°C, relative humidity ≥95%) promotes rapid formation of C-S-H gel, with 3-day compressive strength reaching 90-110MPa. In the production of complex components for the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater, Qinglong Group used the steam curing process to shorten demolding time to 24 hours, improving mold turnover. Steam-free UHPC relies on optimization of the material system itself, such as incorporating nano nucleating agents and high-efficiency water reducers, and its 28-day strength can also meet standards, but with lower early strength, making it suitable for projects without tight schedules.
Microstructure affects durability. Steam curing refines the pores, reducing the most probable pore diameter from 100nm to below 50nm and lowering the chloride ion diffusion coefficient by about 30%. However, improper steam curing may lead to delayed ettringite formation, affecting long-term performance. Steam-free UHPC hydrates more fully with better volume stability, with a drying shrinkage rate 0.01%-0.02% lower. Qinglong Group recommends steam curing for critical structural components, while ordinary components can adopt steam-free solutions, balancing performance and cost.
