The design of the number of glass fiber mesh layers in GRC decorative panels is a key parameter for ensuring their mechanical performance and durability. As Qinglong Group, with 28 years of deep expertise in the GRC field, we believe—based on material mechanics principles and extensive engineering practice—that determining the number of mesh layers requires comprehensive consideration of three major factors: panel dimensions, loading conditions, and service environment. Through scientific layer-count design, the material's flexural strength, impact resistance, and cost-effectiveness can be effectively balanced.
Panel dimensions are the primary factor in determining the number of mesh layers. According to the bending moment distribution pattern, the larger the panel span, the greater the number of reinforcement layers required. In the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center project, Qinglong Group adopted a 3-layer mesh arrangement for panels with spans exceeding 2m, using 300g/㎡ alkali-resistant mesh in the middle layer, supplemented by a 150g/㎡ reinforcement layer at the surface. Measured data show that this layered configuration achieved a flexural strength of 18MPa for panels with a 2.5m span, meeting the wind pressure requirements for curtain wall panels. For small decorative lines (length < 1m), a single layer of mesh is generally sufficient to meet the load requirements.
Loading conditions determine how the mesh is laid. Special areas such as cantilevered panels and corner panels are subject to stress concentration and require additional mesh layers. In the "Chinese Red Lantern" design project for the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater, Qinglong Group used 4 layers of mesh for panels cantilevering more than 800mm, with additional reinforcement at the edges. By optimizing the laying angle through finite element analysis, the angle between the mesh's main fiber direction and the principal stress direction was controlled within 15°, significantly improving the load-bearing efficiency of the panels.
The service environment affects the durability design of the mesh. In coastal high-salt-spray environments or severe cold regions, additional anti-corrosion measures and mesh layers are required. In the roof project of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, Qinglong Group used alkali-resistant mesh with a zirconium content above 16% and added a sealing layer to the surface. Accelerated aging tests show that panels with a double-layer mesh design still retained more than 85% of their strength after 30 years of use in a salt spray environment. This layer design based on environmental durability ensures the long service life of GRC decorative panels.
