Traditional wooden molds face three major technical bottlenecks when producing arbitrarily curved GRC panels: low modeling accuracy (error ≥3mm/2m), poor surface finish (Ra ≥12.5μm), and short service life (≤50 uses). However, complex curved surfaces such as double-curved and multi-curved forms require mold accuracy ≤1mm/2m, surface roughness Ra ≤3.2μm, and reusability of ≥200 times. The natural anisotropy of wood makes it unable to meet the requirements of high-precision curved surface forming, with problems such as springback deformation and uneven shrinkage occurring especially in areas with drastic curvature changes.
Specific data comparison: when traditional wooden molds form double-curved surfaces, the thermal expansion/contraction coefficient reaches 0.3mm/m·℃ and moisture deformation is 0.4mm/m·%RH, making it impossible to maintain shape stability. In contrast, the composite material molds used by Qinglong GRC have a thermal deformation coefficient ≤0.01mm/m·℃ and moisture deformation ≤0.02mm/m·%RH, ensuring consistently stable modeling accuracy. In a double-curved curtain wall project for an art center, CNC-machined epoxy resin molds were used; after 200 uses, inspection showed the surface profile error was still controlled within ±0.8mm, fully meeting design requirements.
The anisotropy of wood causes shrinkage rates to differ by 3-5 times in different directions; changes in moisture content cause dimensional fluctuations of ±0.5%; fiber direction affects carving precision, amplifying errors on complex curved surfaces by 2-3 times. These characteristics make it difficult for wooden molds to meet high-precision requirements.
When machining wood with five-axis CNC, tool deflection causes surface profile errors ≥0.5mm; slender tools are prone to chatter, affecting surface quality; wood fiber tearing is difficult to completely avoid, requiring extensive manual trimming. Machining efficiency is only 1/3 that of composite material molds.
Wood has poor moisture resistance and deforms easily in the GRC production environment (humidity ≥80%); alkaline corrosion (pH ≥12.5) accelerates aging; demolding impacts cause edge damage. The average service life is only 50 uses before major repairs are needed, while composite material molds can exceed 300 uses.
The per-use amortized cost of wooden molds for complex curved surfaces is 2-3 times that of composite material molds; high repair frequency leads to downtime losses; rapid precision degradation affects product quality stability. The full life-cycle cost is actually higher.
Curved surface forming requires precise molds. Qinglong GRC's advanced mold technology achieves precise rendering of complex shapes.
