The recoating cycle for GRC exterior wall waterproof coatings depends on the coating type and service environment. Fluorocarbon coatings have a recoating cycle of 10-12 years, polyurethane coatings 8-10 years, and acrylic coatings 5-7 years. In corrosive environments such as coastal or industrial areas, the recoating cycle should be appropriately shortened by 20%-30%. Proper recoating can effectively extend the service life of GRC exterior walls.
Recoating must follow a strict process: substrate preparation (cleaning, sanding, repair) → primer application (thickness ≥30μm) → topcoat application (thickness ≥35μm) → curing and protection. A project performed its first recoating after 8 years of use; testing showed the old coating's adhesion still reached 1.5MPa, and after recoating with a compatible system, the waterproofing performance was restored to like-new condition.
Factors such as UV intensity, temperature variation, and pollution levels affect coating life. In coastal areas, salt spray corrosion requires the recoating cycle to be shortened to 7-9 years; in industrial areas, acid rain shortens it to 6-8 years.
Recoating is needed promptly when the coating shows chalking (rating ≤2), discoloration (ΔE≥5), blistering, or peeling. Adhesion testing shows that when strength falls below 1.0MPa, recoating must be performed.
Substrate moisture content ≤8%, ambient temperature 5-35°C, relative humidity ≤85%. Coating thickness is controlled with a wet film gauge, and dry film thickness is measured with an ultrasonic thickness gauge.
Recoating materials must be compatible with the old coating and pass compatibility testing. Fluorocarbon systems with better weather resistance are recommended to extend the maintenance cycle.
A scientific recoating plan can significantly reduce lifecycle costs. Establishing a coating maintenance record is recommended to enable predictive maintenance.
