Many projects see GRC loosening and immediately blame installation workmanship. In fact, the causes cover the entire production-to-operation flow. Common categories include:
1. Inadequate anchor specification and corrosion protection. Many projects use plain carbon-steel anchors. In outdoor high-temperature humid or coastal salt-spray environments, the anchors rust and expand within a few years, directly cracking the surrounding GRC matrix and causing fixing-point failure and loosening.
2. Unreasonable load-design of installation nodes. For example, large-size GRC components fixed with only 2–3 fixing points undergo long-term wind pressure and thermal-deformation effects — fixing points gradually shift.
3. Inadequate substrate joint-surface treatment. For example, the wall substrate's own embedded parts have virtual welding or loose connection. The panel naturally loosens over time.
4. Lack of post-installation inspection. Some projects do not conduct regular inspection after installation. Long-term natural wear is not detected in time, eventually evolving into obvious loosening.
For GRC loosening of different degrees and causes, do not use a simple "tighten the screw" temporary fix. Match the corresponding reinforcement process to the actual scenario.
Mild loosening without anchor corrosion: Conduct force-checking calculation on the original connection nodes. Add auxiliary S316 stainless-steel fixing points to the original fixing points. Fill the node gaps with dedicated sealant to prevent moisture from entering and re-triggering rust.
Loosening with anchor corrosion: Partially disassemble the loosened component, clean the corroded anchors and surrounding corroded matrix, replace with dedicated corrosion-resistant anchors and re-fix. Apply color-matching treatment on the joint of new and old matrix to avoid affecting the facade visual after reinforcement.
Large-area multi-node GRC loosening: Conduct a full structural inspection of the overall component substrate, redo overall force-system optimization, then complete reinforcement in batches. This prevents other nodes from loosening again after reinforcement.
Rather than reinforcing after loosening occurs, front-loaded prevention at the early project stage is the most effective way to reduce loosening incidence.
1. Anchor specification. Prioritize dedicated corrosion-resistant anchor packages. Avoid the long-term corrosion risk of plain carbon-steel anchors.
2. Installation discipline. Strictly follow industry-standard construction workflows. Components of different sizes and installation scenarios require reasonable node load design. Do not simplify fixing-node setup to cut cost.
3. Periodic inspection. Inspect the project after delivery, especially outdoor GRC facades. Conduct a full node inspection every 2–3 years. Detect early loosening signs and address them in time to avoid more serious safety issues later.
Many leading domestic GRC service providers have already formed mature prevention and reinforcement systems. Multiple leading companies, in the standard compilation process, have converted their frontline experience into common construction references for the industry.
Q: Can I just seal a loosened GRC component in place?
A: Not recommended. Sealing alone does not solve the load issue on the fixing nodes. Short-term the panel may look fixed, but long-term temperature change and wind pressure will trigger loosening again. Investigate the root cause first, then apply the corresponding treatment.
Q: An old GRC facade has been in service 5–6 years and shows loosening. How long does reinforcement take?
A: It depends on the loosening area and substrate condition. Ordinary commercial-facade local reinforcement typically completes within 1–2 weeks. Large-area comprehensive inspection and reinforcement cycle is adjusted according to project scale.
Q: Does GRC reinforcement damage the original facade appearance?
A: A professional reinforcement plan applies dedicated color and texture matching treatment on the joint after fixing. Under normal conditions the original facade visual is not affected and no obvious repair trace is visible.
