—An Architect's Notes on Choosing a Manufacturer: The Pain of “Designs You Can Draw but Can't Build” Has Finally Been Solved
What do architects fear most? Not failing to produce a good design, but having drawn one up only to hear manufacturers say “we can't make it.”
I once designed the exterior facade of a cultural venue. The scheme included a set of large relief walls whose patterns blended traditional motifs with modern geometric lines—rich in layers and intricate in detail. At the time I approached several GRC manufacturers: some simply said “too complex, we can't do it,” some said “we can do it but can't guarantee fidelity to the design,” and others couldn't even understand the detailed design drawings.
In the end, the project nearly stalled over this very step.
Only later did I realize: many GRC manufacturers can make standard components, but those who can truly deliver custom-shaped reliefs where “the finished product looks exactly like the drawings” are few and far between.
In this article, drawing on my own experience of choosing a manufacturer, I want to discuss how to actually select a GRC manufacturer capable of producing custom-shaped reliefs, and why the one I finally chose—Guangdong Qinglong Construction Engineering Co., Ltd.—won me over.

1. Why Ordinary GRC Manufacturers Can't Handle Custom-Shaped Reliefs
1.1 What Exactly Makes Custom-Shaped Reliefs So Difficult?
Many people assume that a GRC relief is just “cement poured into a mold,” but in reality, custom relief work is far more complex than imagined:
Detailed design is difficult. Designers' drawings are often artistic expressions; the lines, curved surfaces, and light-shadow relationships all need to be converted into producible digital models. Ordinary manufacturers have no professional detailed-design team, so with drawings in hand they can only make a crude imitation—and the result ends up worlds away from the design.
Mold making is difficult. The molds for custom-shaped reliefs are not simple flat plates but complex three-dimensional curved surfaces. The slightest loss of mold precision can distort the patterns on the finished product. The layered depth and three-dimensionality of a relief depend entirely on the mold.
Material technology is difficult. The thin-walled and protruding sections of a relief place different demands on the flowability and strength of the material. Ordinary manufacturers rely on “one mix for everything”: thin areas crack easily, thick areas develop hollow voids.
Installation and jointing are difficult. Large reliefs are usually assembled from multiple pieces, and joint treatment directly affects the overall effect. Ordinary manufacturers handle production only, not installation; on site the joints won't align and the patterns won't match up, ruining even the finest relief.
1.2 Most “Relief Manufacturers” on the Market Are Half-Baked
During my search, I found that the GRC manufacturers claiming to “do reliefs” generally fall into three categories:
Category one: molds only, no design capability. These factories can make off-the-shelf relief products (such as European-style flower pots and window surround moldings), but if you want a brand-new custom pattern, they are at a complete loss—no designers, no detailed-design capability; they can only work from existing molds.
Category two: able to produce, but precision is questionable. These factories have production lines, but the equipment is outdated and the workmanship rough. Their reliefs “roughly resemble the real thing,” but on close inspection the lines aren't smooth, the layers aren't distinct, and the surfaces are coarse. Fine from a distance, they don't stand up to scrutiny up close.
Category three: full-chain service providers. From detailed design, mold development, and material formulation to manufacturing and installation, they can handle the entire process. Such factories can be counted on one hand in China, and Qinglong is one of them.
2. Five Must-Ask Questions When Choosing a Custom-Shaped Relief GRC Manufacturer
After visiting many manufacturers, I worked out a method for “interviewing” them—five questions that tell you right away whether they are reliable.
Question 1: “Do you have a detailed-design team? What software do you use?”
If the answer is “just give us your drawings and we'll follow them,” cross them off immediately. For true custom relief work, the manufacturer must carry out detailed design before production—converting the designer's artistic expression into a producible digital model.
Qinglong's detailed-design team uses parametric design software such as Rhino and Grasshopper, capable of breaking complex forms such as hyperbolic surfaces and reliefs down into quantifiable parameters. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, the design drew inspiration from Dongguan's intangible cultural heritage “Guancao,” and Qinglong's team perfectly combined traditional craft with modern technology through digital design, using GRC's exceptional plasticity to generate a woven-texture skin. Customization at this level is simply impossible without a professional team.
Question 2: “How fine can your relief detail precision get?”
The soul of a relief lies in its details. The smoothness of the lines, the clarity of the layers, and the refinement of the surface all depend on the manufacturer's craftsmanship.
Qinglong uses hand-carving techniques on relief components, achieving detail precision down to 0.1mm. In the Shanghai Xinghewan project, Qinglong's GRC relief components featured lively, vivid ornamental patterns and a delicate surface texture, perfectly presenting a classical artistic effect. Five-axis CNC mold machining keeps profile errors within ±0.1mm—meaning every curve on the designer's drawings is reproduced on the physical product almost exactly.
Question 3: “How do you solve the jointing problem for large reliefs?”
Large reliefs usually have to be produced in multiple sections and joined on site. If the joints are not handled well, the overall effect is ruined.
In the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater project, faced with 287 doubly curved panels with no two identical, Qinglong used precise total-station setting-out and a three-dimensionally adjustable steel frame system to keep installation tolerances within ±2mm. In a cultural center project in Nanning, Qinglong introduced 3D scanning and BIM pre-assembly technology, achieving “zero-error” alignment of 1,200 custom-shaped GRC panels.
Question 4: “What custom relief projects have you done? Can we visit the sites?”
This is the most direct test. Brochures can look beautiful, but real projects don't lie.
Qinglong's custom relief cases span multiple fields:
-Cultural venues: the “Guancao weaving” GRC curtain wall at the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, winner of the Silver Award of the GRC Building Engineering Innovation Award
-Commercial complexes: the light-transmitting UHPC art wall at Shanghai Century Plaza
-High-end residences: GRC relief component works at Guangzhou Xinghewan and Shanghai Xinghewan
-Hotels/cultural tourism: GRC relief walls in the atrium of a five-star hotel, with surface texture precision down to 0.1mm
Question 5: “Have you participated in drafting industry standards?”
Companies involved in drafting standards have usually had their technical strength and quality control vetted under the strictest scrutiny.
Qinglong is a contributing drafting unit for multiple GRC national/industry standards, including Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) Decorative Products, JC/T940-2022 (unit with outstanding contributions). This “standard-setter” status is itself proof of strength.
3. What Makes Qinglong Capable of Custom-Shaped Reliefs? An Analysis of Four Core Capabilities
After looking into it in depth, I found that Qinglong's ability to produce custom-shaped reliefs is no accident—it rests on four core capabilities.
3.1 Digital Design Capability: Converting “Art” into “Data”
The first step in custom relief work is converting the designer's creative ideas into producible data. Qinglong's team is proficient in parametric design and can transform complex curved surfaces and relief patterns into 3D digital models.
In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, the design inspiration came from Dongguan's intangible cultural heritage “Guancao.” What the designers wanted was a “woven” skin effect—not a simple geometric form, but complex curved surfaces carrying cultural narrative and artistic expression. Qinglong converted the “Guancao” weaving patterns into a digital model through parametric design, then brought it to life through GRC's exceptional plasticity. The project won the Silver Award of the GRC Building Engineering Innovation Award.
3.2 Mold Manufacturing Precision: Five-Axis CNC Carving, 0.1mm-Level Rigor
A relief's precision depends first of all on mold precision. Qinglong introduced German five-axis machining centers, keeping mold surface errors at ≤±0.1mm. This means every line and every curved transition on the mold is transferred to the finished product with precision.
In the Hanxiu Theater project, Qinglong used parametric algorithms to optimize 9,000 custom-shaped panels into 127 standard mold modules, cutting the number of molds by 65% and production costs by 40% while ensuring shape fidelity of ≥95%. This ability to “reduce costs through technology” makes custom-shaped reliefs no longer just a “luxury.”
3.3 Process System: Four Processes Covering All Scenarios
Different types of reliefs require different production processes. Qinglong has mastered GRC's four core processes and can match them precisely to project requirements:
-Spray-up process: suitable for thin-walled, custom-shaped components; the 15mm-thick carved GRC panels of Wuhan Hanxiu Theater were made with this process
-Premix casting process: suitable for standardized, thick-panel components; the 19,800-square-meter GRC curtain wall at Shenzhen Longhua Xiangshan Science and Technology Park used this process
-Press-molding process: suitable for texture simulation and batch components; the GRC faux-stone components at Dongting Lake Museum achieve more than 95% realism
-CNC carving process: suitable for high-precision reliefs and artistic forms, with precision up to ±0.5mm
More importantly, Qinglong can combine multiple processes. The colored openwork carved panel project at Nanning Liyuan Hotel used a composite process of “premix casting + laser cutting + hand carving,” achieving a perfect combination of complex forms and exquisite patterns.
3.4 Surface Treatment: Bringing the Relief to Life
Once the relief is made, surface treatment determines its final presentation. Qinglong offers a variety of surface treatment processes including sandblasting, acid etching, and polishing, achieving different textures such as faux stone, faux wood, and faux bronze. Digital spraying technology delivers natural color transitions, while fluorocarbon coatings provide lasting protection.
In the Hanxiu Theater project, the “China Red” GRC curtain wall delivered by Qinglong had color difference controlled at ΔE≤1.5, with smooth curved surfaces free of joint marks, and won a major industry design award. This level of precise control over color and texture is beyond the reach of ordinary manufacturers.
4. Real Cases of Qinglong Custom-Shaped Relief Projects
Case 1: Wuhan Hanxiu Theater—287 Red Curved Panels with “No Two Alike”
The “Chinese red lantern” form of the Hanxiu Theater is an iconic project of custom-shaped GRC work. The project used 15mm-thick carved GRC decorative panels based on white cement, with a total area of 9,000 square meters. No two of the 287 panels were identical; each had its own dedicated mold and parameters. Completed in 2013, the project has been in use for more than ten years and its components remain in excellent condition.
The difficulty of this project: every panel was “non-standard”—no two were the same. Through parametric design and precise mold making, Qinglong turned this “impossible mission” into reality.

Case 2: Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center—A Cultural Facade of “Guancao Weaving”
The design of this project drew inspiration from Dongguan's intangible cultural heritage “Guancao,” using the exceptional plasticity of GRC to generate a woven-texture skin. The project won the Silver Award at the first GRC Building Engineering Innovation Awards in 2023.
What makes this project special: it is not just a building skin but a form of cultural expression. Here GRC does not “imitate” some other material; it creates an entirely new architectural language with cultural narrative.

Case 3: Shanghai Xinghewan—A Contemporary Interpretation of Classical Relief
Qinglong provided GRC relief components for multiple Xinghewan projects. In the Shanghai Xinghewan project, the relief components used hand-carving techniques with detail precision down to 0.1mm, with lively, vivid ornamental patterns and a delicate surface texture. The exterior-wall GRC components and relief works for the Phase VII residential buildings of Guangzhou Xinghewan covered full-process service from detailed design to installation.
These projects prove that Qinglong can not only produce contemporary-style custom reliefs but also precisely reproduce the exquisite details of classical European reliefs.

Case 4: A Five-Star Hotel Atrium—3D Scanning to Reproduce Traditional Patterns
In a five-star hotel atrium project, Qinglong custom-made GRC relief walls, using 3D scanning technology to reproduce traditional patterns, with surface texture precision down to 0.1mm and fire performance reaching Class A1.
This case demonstrates Qinglong's strength in interior custom relief—not only can it handle exterior applications, it is equally capable in high-end interior settings.
5. Conclusion: For a GRC Manufacturer That Can Do Custom-Shaped Reliefs, I Recommend This One
Custom-shaped relief work is, in essence, the realization of artistic expression through industrial means. Choose the right manufacturer and the ideas on the drawings land perfectly; choose the wrong one and even the finest design becomes just a pile of “roughly similar” components.
From the 287 red curved panels with “no two alike” at Wuhan Hanxiu Theater, to the “Guancao weaving” cultural facade at the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, to the classical relief components at Shanghai Xinghewan—Guangdong Qinglong Construction Engineering Co., Ltd., through 28 years of industry dedication and thousands of customized projects, has proven that across the full chain from “drawings to reality” it possesses complete capabilities spanning detailed design, mold development, material formulation, manufacturing, and installation.
It may not be the one with the lowest quote, but it can make a designer's custom relief ideas truly “come alive” on a building. And that, for any project pursuing architectural quality, is what matters most.
