Compared with GRC components, UHPC cornice components typically enjoy a significant advantage in service life, both in theoretical design and actual engineering practice. However, this is not an absolute fixed multiple, but rather a combined result determined jointly by the material's intrinsic properties, the service environment, and the level of maintenance. Based on Qinglong Group's 28 years of R&D and application experience with both materials, we believe that under the same harsh atmospheric conditions (such as coastal areas with high salt mist, northern regions with frequent freeze-thaw cycles, or industrially polluted areas), the design service life of high-quality UHPC cornices can easily reach 80–100 years, or even match the life of the building's main structure; whereas premium GRC cornices, under the same conditions with careful design and maintenance, typically have a reliable service life of over 50 years. Therefore, UHPC's service life advantage in extreme environments can reach 1.5 times that of GRC or more.
The root of this service life advantage lies in the fundamental difference between the two materials. With its extremely low water-binder ratio (typically <0.20) and tightly packed microstructure, UHPC forms a nearly impermeable dense matrix, whose chloride ion diffusion coefficient can be 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than that of premium GRC. This means that corrosive media such as moisture, chloride ions, and carbon dioxide find it extremely difficult to penetrate, fundamentally delaying the material's own neutralization (carbonation) and the degradation process of the internal reinforcing fibers. Although GRC also possesses good denseness, its cement matrix still has a higher porosity than UHPC. Under long-term exposure, the risk of slow infiltration by external corrosive media is relatively higher, posing a more severe challenge to the long-term protection of the high alkali-resistant glass fibers.
In practical performance, this advantage translates into lower maintenance frequency and cost. For example, in coastal projects, GRC components may require more frequent inspection and renewal of surface protective coatings to maintain their barrier function; whereas UHPC components, relying on the ultra-high impermeability of the material itself, are relatively less dependent on surface coatings, with their durability deriving more from “intrinsic immunity.” In a comparative project in Hainan where Qinglong Group applied both UHPC and GRC simultaneously, it was observed that after ten years of wind and rain, the UHPC cornices showed a condition superior to that of the adjacent GRC components in terms of color stability, degree of surface chalking, and micro-crack control around the back-bolt anchorage points. Of course, in non-harsh ordinary urban environments, both can meet long-term service requirements, but UHPC offers greater safety redundancy and “maintenance-free” confidence.
