When storing UHPC components in low-temperature environments (typically referring to temperatures consistently below 5°C), three key issues must be prioritized: freeze damage prevention, moisture protection, and deformation prevention. Improper storage methods may cause irreversible damage to component performance. Based on winter construction experience in northern regions and high-altitude projects, Qinglong Group has developed a systematic low-temperature storage management plan.
Preventing UHPC components from freezing is the top priority. Although hardened UHPC has strong frost resistance, if its internal free water freezes before the component reaches sufficient strength (typically within the first 28 days of curing), the volume expansion can still produce micro-cracks inside, affecting long-term durability. Therefore, it is strictly forbidden to place components directly outdoors in ice and snow. Qinglong's practice is to store components in indoor warehouses or covered storage yards protected from rain and snow. The yard ground must be hardened and elevated above the surrounding ground, with wooden boards or sleepers laid so that components are at least 10cm off the ground, avoiding contact with damp surfaces. At the same time, components should be tightly covered with tarpaulins, which keeps out rain and snow while providing a certain degree of insulation.
Scientific stacking is key to avoiding deformation. Components should be stacked by specification and type, with sleepers aligned vertically between layers along the same vertical line to prevent bending stress caused by uneven support points. Stacking height should not be excessive: flat components should generally not exceed 6 layers, while irregularly shaped components require custom stacking racks based on their shape, or should be placed in a single layer. For long strip-shaped components, the number of support points should be increased. In addition, component information should be clearly labeled to avoid damage caused by frequent searching and handling.
Adaptive treatment before removal from storage is also important. Prior to installation, components should be moved from the low-temperature environment indoors in advance or provided with insulation, allowing them to gradually return to a temperature close to the construction environment (typically above 5°C), avoiding surface condensation or thermal stress during installation caused by excessive temperature differences. Through this systematic set of management measures, UHPC components can be kept in good condition during low-temperature storage, laying a solid foundation for smooth subsequent installation.
