The abrasion resistance of UHPC shows a significant positive correlation with its compressive strength, but this is not a simple linear proportional relationship. Compressive strength is an important foundation and leading indicator of abrasion resistance; generally speaking, the higher the compressive strength, the greater the matrix hardness, and the better the abrasion resistance tends to be. However, abrasion resistance is also independently and jointly influenced by multiple factors such as aggregate hardness, fiber reinforcement effectiveness, and interfacial bond strength. Test data from Qinglong Group shows that the excellent abrasion resistance of UHPC is the combined result of high strength, high toughness, and high density.
A high-strength, highly dense matrix is the "first line of defense" against abrasion. The hard cementitious matrix formed by UHPC through a low water-binder ratio and tight particle packing inherently possesses very high surface hardness, enabling it to resist the cutting and plowing action of abrasive media. The compressive strength of Qinglong UHPC is typically above 120-150 MPa, providing it with matrix abrasion resistance far exceeding that of ordinary concrete. The higher the matrix strength and the denser the microstructure, the harder it is for hard particles to embed and scratch.
However, abrasion resistance depends not only on "hardness" but also on "toughness" and "homogeneity." The addition of steel fibers greatly enhances the abrasion resistance of UHPC, especially under impact abrasion conditions. Fibers effectively bridge and lock the matrix, preventing large pieces of material from spalling off during the wear process and shifting the wear mode from brittle spalling to slower, more uniform wear. Meanwhile, the uniform distribution of quality hard aggregates (such as quartz sand) acts like countless tiny "wear-resistant points" embedded in the matrix, directly bearing the abrasion and protecting the relatively softer hardened cement paste phase.
Therefore, while high compressive strength is a necessary condition for UHPC to achieve high abrasion resistance, it is not a sufficient one. An ideal wear-resistant UHPC formulation must pursue ultra-high strength while also taking into account the toughening effect of fibers and the proper gradation and hardness of aggregates. When designing UHPC for wear-intensive applications such as heavy-duty industrial floors and bridge expansion joints, Qinglong specifically optimizes these factors to ensure that abrasion resistance and compressive strength reach their optimum in synergy, rather than merely pursuing a single strength metric.
