Steam curing (thermal curing) is a key process for enhancing the mechanical properties and microstructural density of UHPC. Its principle is far more than simple "heating and drying": through the synergistic action of temperature and humidity, it significantly accelerates and deepens cement hydration and pozzolanic reactions, thereby reconstructing the material structure at the molecular scale. Qinglong Group's standard steam curing regime allows the latent reactivity of UHPC to be fully released within tens of hours—the "final decisive step" toward its ultra-high performance.
One of the core functions of steam curing is to greatly accelerate the pozzolanic reaction of silica fume. Silica fume is key to UHPC achieving high strength, but its pozzolanic reaction at room temperature is extremely slow. In a saturated steam environment of 70–90°C, the reaction rate between the active SiO₂ on the surface of silica fume particles and the Ca(OH)₂ produced by cement hydration grows exponentially. This reaction generates more, denser low-calcium C-S-H gel, which not only consumes the weak Ca(OH)₂ phase, but this newly formed gel also has lower porosity and stronger binding capacity—the microscopic source of the leap in strength.
Meanwhile, steam curing promotes the deep hydration of cement clinker minerals. An appropriate temperature rise accelerates the hydration rate of the unhydrated portions inside cement particles, making hydration more thorough. More importantly, under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, the morphology and distribution of hydration products are optimized, forming a more uniform and more tightly interwoven microstructure. This represents a qualitative improvement compared with the locally incomplete hydration and structural non-uniformity that may occur under ambient-temperature curing.
In addition, steam curing helps reduce harmful pores and refine the pore structure. During the controlled heating and cooling process, moisture migration and internal stress are better coordinated, reducing native defects. A continuous supply of moisture prevents early water-loss cracking. Ultimately, steam-cured UHPC has extremely low porosity, with pores that are mostly closed nano-scale micropores, giving it not only high strength but also exceptionally excellent impermeability and durability. Qinglong's steam curing curve is precisely designed to ensure performance improvement while avoiding negative effects caused by thermal stress or excessively rapid drying.
