The installation of GRC shapes combined with lighting is an advanced application for shaping a building's nighttime image and enhancing its artistic expression. Its success hinges on achieving the pure effect of "light visible, fixtures invisible" while ensuring long-term safety and stability. Such installations require coordinated consideration of multiple factors, including luminaire selection and positioning, concealment and protection of wiring, GRC light transmittance and thickness, and heat dissipation and maintenance. Qinglong Group has accumulated extensive experience in integrated lighting installation through projects such as the UHPC translucent concrete project at Century Plaza, Nanjing East Road, Shanghai New World.
Precise luminaire selection and concealed installation are the foundation. LED linear lights, floodlights, or point light sources should be selected according to the design effect (wall washing, internal transmission, or point lighting). Luminaire positions must be accurately marked in advance in the GRC detailed design drawings, with mounting bases pre-embedded or light recesses reserved during production. The luminaires themselves should be concealed as much as possible behind GRC joints and transition surfaces or within dedicated cavities to avoid direct exposure. All wiring must be protected in conduits, and a low-voltage power supply system should be adopted to ensure safety.
The treatment of the GRC components themselves is key. For effects requiring internal light transmission, translucent GRC must be used. This is typically achieved in two ways: one is incorporating light-guiding fibers into the GRC matrix; the other is making the GRC thin (e.g., 10–15mm) and controlling its density to give it a certain degree of light transmittance. In either case, full-scale mock-ups must be produced for lighting tests to confirm the optimal thickness, luminaire distance, and brightness. At the same time, attention must be paid to the uniformity of GRC thickness across different areas; otherwise, uneven light and dark patches will appear under the lighting.
Heat dissipation and maintainability must be considered upfront. LED luminaires generate heat during extended operation, and poor heat dissipation will seriously affect their lifespan. Ventilation holes must be designed in the light recesses or cavities. More importantly, reasonable maintenance access must be designed. Luminaires have a limited lifespan and cannot last as long as the building itself. Qinglong typically recommends a detachable GRC access panel design or modular installation, so that each GRC panel with integrated lights can be individually removed for maintenance. All cable connectors should be located in easily accessible positions and properly protected against water and moisture. Only through thorough integrated design can GRC radiate at night an artistic charm entirely different from that of the daytime.
