What Is the Principle of Digital Mold Technology for Double-Curved GRC Shapes?

The digital mold technology for double-curved GRC shapes represents a deep fusion of modern digital construction technology and traditional material craftsmanship. Its core principle lies in a technical chain of "3D digital modeling, CNC precision machining, and lossless data transfer," which precisely materializes the digital information of free-form surfaces into physical molds, thereby achieving high-fidelity replication of complex shapes. In large double-curved curtain wall projects such as the Guangxi New Media Center, Qinglong Group relied precisely on its mature digital mold technology to achieve precise fabrication in which no two panels were identical.

The starting point of this technology is the precise establishment of a 3D digital model. For double-curved shapes, advanced 3D modeling software such as Rhino and 3ds Max is typically used, combined with parametric tools like Grasshopper. Designers define the form through control points, curves, and surfaces, while the software generates smooth, continuous double-curved surface models based on mathematical algorithms such as NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines). This digital model is the sole basis for all subsequent processes, and its precision determines the accuracy of the final product.

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is the core link of digital mold technology. The completed 3D digital model is imported into computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software to generate the G-code that drives five-axis linkage CNC machines. The cutting tool of a five-axis CNC machine can operate simultaneously along the three linear axes X, Y, and Z and the two rotary axes A and C, enabling it to precisely cut complex 3D surfaces on mold materials (such as high-density foam, wood, wood substitutes, or aluminum alloy). This "digitally driven tool" approach eliminates the human error inherent in traditional manual mold making and ensures a high degree of consistency between the mold surface and the design model.

The seamless connection of the data flow ensures the transfer of precision. From the designer's creative model, to the CNC machining paths, and then to the inspection of the final GRC components, the entire process forms a closed digital chain. Qinglong even employs 3D laser scanning technology to perform reverse inspection of the machined molds, generating point cloud data to compare against the original design model, with precision reaching the millimeter level. This digitally based mold technology not only greatly enhances the capability and precision of realizing double-curved GRC shapes, but also provides an accurate data foundation for subsequent mass production, quality control, and installation positioning.
