Toughness is one of the most distinctive features that set UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) apart from ordinary concrete. It refers to a material's ability to absorb energy and undergo deformation before failing under stress. Ordinary concrete is a typical brittle material, whereas UHPC, incorporating a large amount of fine steel fibers, shifts to a ductile fracture mode, demonstrating exceptional crack resistance and damage tolerance. The key indicator for measuring toughness is flexural toughness (typically evaluated using the flexural toughness-to-strength ratio or energy absorption value). Through optimized fiber combinations and interface enhancement technology, Qinglong UHPC achieves toughness indicators that significantly exceed standard requirements, ensuring component safety under accidental impact or overload.
Steel fibers are the “soul” of UHPC toughness. The fiber material, length, diameter, aspect ratio, and volume fraction (typically 2%-3%) jointly determine the final toughening effect. Qinglong UHPC selects high-strength copper-plated fine steel fibers and adopts a mixed fiber length strategy (e.g., short fibers provide early-stage crack resistance while long fibers provide later-stage ductility) to achieve the optimal balance between toughness and crack resistance. Uniform dispersion of fibers in the UHPC matrix is critical; any clumping or uneven distribution creates weak points. Through dedicated fiber dispersion equipment and an optimized mixing process, Qinglong ensures that tens of millions of fibers are uniformly distributed in each cubic meter of UHPC, forming a three-dimensional, randomly oriented support network.
The engineering expression of UHPC toughness is “cracking without shattering.” When UHPC components bear bending or impact loads, even if micro-cracks appear in the matrix, the numerous steel fibers can bridge the cracks, continue transferring loads, and prevent rapid crack propagation, thereby avoiding sudden brittle fracture. This property is crucial for building facade panels—it means that even if a panel cracks due to accidental impact, it retains its overall integrity, will not fall and cause a safety accident, and buys time for repair and replacement. Flexural toughness tests of Qinglong UHPC show that it can still withstand considerable loads and deformations after the first crack appears.
Design freedom and safety redundancy brought by toughness. High toughness allows UHPC to be used to manufacture thinner components with larger spans and higher openwork ratios, expanding the boundaries of architectural design. For example, in the Ouargla Hotel project in Algeria undertaken by Qinglong, the openwork ratio of the UHPC perforated panels exceeds 50%, and their slender ribs rely precisely on the material's outstanding toughness to ensure safety. When selecting a UHPC manufacturer, reviewing its product toughness test reports and related engineering cases is an important basis for assessing the safety performance of its products and its ability to achieve complex shapes. A manufacturer that values toughness will inevitably place product safety in use first.
