Impermeability is one of the core indicators for evaluating the durability of UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete). It directly determines the material's ability to resist the penetration of water, chloride ions, and other harmful media, which in turn affects its freeze-thaw resistance, resistance to steel reinforcement corrosion, and long-term strength. Thanks to its extremely low water-binder ratio and tight particle packing, UHPC inherently possesses excellent impermeability, but the impermeability of products from different manufacturers still varies. Through material optimization and process control, Qinglong UHPC typically achieves an impermeability grade of P12 or above (i.e., it can withstand 1.2 MPa of water pressure without seepage), far exceeding ordinary concrete and providing a reliable protective barrier for buildings.
The materials science principle behind achieving ultra-high impermeability lies in extreme densification. Qinglong UHPC achieves this goal through the synergy of multiple technical approaches: first, a low water-binder ratio (typically between 0.18 and 0.22) and high-efficiency polycarboxylate superplasticizers are used to reduce free water content and lower porosity at the source. Second, large amounts of ultra-fine active mineral admixtures such as silica fume are added; their particle size is far smaller than that of cement particles, effectively filling the gaps between cement particles and making the paste structure denser. The application of this "maximum particle packing density" theory is the fundamental reason why UHPC achieves near-impermeable performance.
Quantitative testing of impermeability and adherence to standards. There are standard test methods for evaluating UHPC impermeability, mainly referring to the "Standard for Test Methods of Long-term Performance and Durability of Ordinary Concrete". The Qinglong laboratory regularly conducts impermeability tests on its products and records the data. In addition to the traditional impermeability grade test, more advanced evaluation methods such as the Rapid Chloride Migration test (RCM method) can more precisely characterize UHPC's ability to resist chloride ion penetration, which is particularly important for seaside buildings. The chloride diffusion coefficient of Qinglong UHPC is typically as low as 2.0×10⁻¹² m²/s, which represents an extremely low permeability level.
The engineering value of good impermeability is evident. Excellent impermeability means that UHPC components can effectively resist the intrusion of rainwater and humid air during long-term use, preventing internal steel fiber corrosion and freeze-thaw damage. In coastal areas, it can block the penetration of chloride ions from salt spray, protecting the internal structure. Therefore, when selecting a UHPC manufacturer, reviewing its product impermeability test reports and understanding its quality control system is an important step in ensuring that the chosen material offers long-term durability. For projects with special impermeability requirements, Qinglong can also provide customized formulation optimization to meet the most demanding service environments.
