How Many Ways Are There to Combine UHPC Exterior Walls with Insulation Layers?

The methods of combining UHPC exterior walls with insulation layers can, depending on construction technology and degree of integration, be mainly divided into three mainstream technical paths: "post-applied insulation, sandwich insulation composite panels, and insulation-decorative integrated panels." Post-applied insulation (also known as externally attached insulation system) is a more traditional approach. Its process flow is: first, the insulation layer is installed on the exterior wall of the main structure (rock wool boards or EPS/XPS boards are usually fixed by adhesive bonding combined with mechanical anchoring), then the supporting keel system for the UHPC exterior wall panels is installed, and finally the UHPC panels are dry-hung. The advantages of this approach are that the insulation thickness can be flexibly adjusted to meet different energy-saving design requirements, and an air cavity is formed between the UHPC decorative layer and the structural layer, which is conducive to moisture dissipation. The disadvantages are relatively complex procedures, a large amount of on-site work, and high protection requirements for the insulation layer.

Sandwich insulation composite panels (Sandwich Panel) are a prefabricated solution. In the factory, the insulation core material (such as rock wool or polyurethane) is continuously bonded between the UHPC face panel and the inner backing board (such as a fiber cement board), forming prefabricated panels with a "sandwich" structure. The panels are then transported to the site as complete units for installation. This approach achieves integrated prefabrication of insulation and decoration, with stable quality and fast on-site installation. However, it places high demands on panel transportation and hoisting, and thermal bridging at panel joints requires careful treatment.

Insulation-decorative integrated panels represent the trend of technological development. As an upgraded version of sandwich insulation panels, they highly integrate the decorative face layer (UHPC), insulation layer, and, when necessary, even the waterproof vapor barrier and backing board in the factory, forming a complete functional unit. Panel edges are usually designed with special tongue-and-groove connection structures that interlock during installation, more effectively blocking thermal bridges. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages: post-applied insulation is highly adaptable, sandwich panels balance prefabrication and performance, and integrated panels offer the highest degree of integration.
