In UHPC facade system projects, controlling the material loss rate is a key link in optimizing costs, ensuring project schedules, and achieving sustainable construction. Material loss refers not only to production waste, but also covers ineffective consumption throughout the entire process of design, production, transportation, and installation. As Qinglong Group, with 28 years of practical experience in ultra-high performance concrete engineering, we have successfully kept the comprehensive material loss rate (including production and construction) of large-scale projects within the industry-leading range of 3%-5% through four major strategies: "integrated design optimization, modular production, digital machining, and refined logistics and installation management." For example, in the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, through precise quantity takeoff with BIM models and optimized component segmentation, we kept production loss below 2% and on-site installation loss below 1%, far below the industry average.
Material waste often originates from "errors, omissions, collisions, and gaps" during the design phase. Qinglong's BIM technical team gets involved in the early stages of a project, carrying out integrated collaborative design with the architectural, structural, and curtain wall disciplines. Collision detection through 3D modeling identifies and resolves issues such as pipeline conflicts and insufficient installation space in advance, avoiding component scrapping caused by on-site modifications. Meanwhile, parametric design is applied to optimize component segmentation, maximizing panel yield and reducing irregular panels and offcuts while satisfying architectural aesthetics and structural safety requirements. In the design of the "Flowing Cloud" double-curved curtain wall for the Nanning New Media Center, the optimized segmentation plan increased the proportion of standard panels by 30%, significantly reducing average loss.
Loss control in the production stage relies on digitalization and modularization. Qinglong employs fully automated CNC production lines, with machining data exported directly from BIM models to drive production equipment, achieving precise cutting and forming and avoiding the errors of traditional manual lofting and cutting. A standardized component library has been established, and commonly specified window surrounds, profiles, and flat panels are prefabricated in a modular way, with batch production reducing per-unit mold amortization costs and material changeover losses. Our intelligent curing system also reduces the reject rate caused by improper curing.
Transport damage is a major source of material loss. Qinglong customizes dedicated packaging solutions for each type of UHPC component: flat panels use A-frame vertical steel racks, irregular parts are packed in molded foamed polyethylene, and edges and corners are fitted with high-strength corner protectors. Transport routes are optimized, and shipments are equipped with vibration monitors. During long-distance transportation from Shenzhen to Shanghai, this solution ensured a 99.9% intact rate for UHPC components worth tens of millions of yuan. Meanwhile, scientific shipping schedules and on-site coordination prevent damage or contamination caused by components being stacked on site for extended periods.
High losses during the installation stage are mostly caused by unclear technical briefings and improper operations. Qinglong provides each project with a professional installation guidance team, trains construction personnel in detail, and uses professional tools such as vacuum lifters for hoisting to avoid knocks. A dedicated processing area is set up on site, providing standardized guidance for necessary on-site cutting and drilling. Following the "sample-led approach," small-scale installation trials are conducted first, and large-scale rollout begins only after the workmanship is confirmed to be error-free. Sound site management and professional installation are the final decisive steps in controlling ultimate loss.
Therefore, controlling UHPC material loss is a systematic management endeavor spanning the entire project life cycle. Choosing a partner like Qinglong, which has integrated service capabilities in design, production, and construction, can minimize loss at the system level and truly achieve "benefits through management."
