Determining the number of alkali-resistant glass fiber mesh layers in GRC decorative panels is a comprehensive technical decision-making process based on structural mechanical performance, service environmental loads, panel dimensions and thickness, and economic rationality. Too few layers may result in insufficient strength, while too many increase cost, impair workability, and may cause delamination due to weak interlayer bonding. Based on 28 years of engineering practice and extensive test data, Qinglong Group has established a scientific method for determining the number of mesh layers. In the 120,000-square-meter roofing project of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, for the extra-large panels in the severe typhoon zone, we adopted a composite reinforcement system of 'double-layer mesh + sprayed chopped fibers' to ensure structural safety; while for the standard curtain wall panels of Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC, a single layer of mesh was used, achieving the optimal balance between performance and cost.
This is the primary factor in determining the number of layers. Structural calculations must be carried out according to the location of the GRC panel in the building (such as curtain wall, roofing, or column cladding) and the loads it bears (wind pressure, self-weight, impact, and seismic action). Finite element analysis is used to determine the direction and magnitude of principal stresses on the panel surface. For flat panels subject mainly to bending, the mesh is primarily placed on the tension face; for shaped panels that may experience biaxial bending or complex stresses, it must be placed at mid-thickness or on both faces. Qinglong's technical specifications require that conventional facade decorative panels (standard wind pressure ≤ 1.0 kPa) usually use 1 layer; load-bearing panels at locations such as cornices and large cantilevers require 2 layers; special load-bearing components or large artistic sculptures may need 3 or more layers, supplemented with a steel reinforcement skeleton.
Panel thickness directly affects the space available for mesh placement and the reinforcement efficiency. Qinglong's experience shows that thin panels below 15 mm thick usually use 1 layer of mesh, placed at mid-thickness toward the tension side; standard panels 15-25 mm thick can use 1-2 layers; thick panels over 25 mm or components requiring extremely high crack resistance can use 2 layers or adopt composite reinforcement of 'chopped fibers + mesh'. The larger the panel, the greater the bending stress produced under the same load, usually requiring more reinforcement layers to control deformation and cracking.
In harsh environments (such as coastal areas with high salt mist or regions with severe freeze-thaw cycles), in addition to ensuring initial strength, a safety margin must be reserved for possible fiber performance degradation during long-term use. In such cases, it is wise to appropriately increase the number of mesh layers or select mesh with higher grammage and higher zirconia content. For coastal projects, Qinglong adds one layer to the conventionally calculated number as a durability redundancy design.
The number of mesh layers must also match the production process. With the spraying process, alternating deposition of 'fiber - mortar - mesh' can be achieved, resulting in good interlayer bonding. With the premix casting process, laying multiple mesh layers requires special attention to interlayer air removal and compaction to avoid trapped layers or voids. Through standardized production work instructions, Qinglong ensures that every layer of mesh is fully impregnated and anchored to deliver maximum reinforcement efficiency.
Therefore, there is no fixed standard for the number of mesh layers in GRC decorative panels; it is the result of coordinated optimization of design, production, and service conditions. In the early stage of a project, Qinglong Group's technical team can perform precise calculations and judgments based on specific parameters, providing customers with the safest, most economical, and most reliable reinforcement solutions.
